The project demonstrates how large-scale offshore wind can strengthen energy security by delivering reliable, home-grown electricity to German industry and households.<\/p>\n<p>Borkum\u00a0Riffgrund\u00a03\u00a0produces\u00a0renewable\u00a0energy at scale\u00a0for\u00a0German\u00a0industrial and technology\u00a0offtakers, underscoring the substantial demand for renewable energy in both the new digital economy as well as core industries such as chemicals.\u00a0Furthermore, the project is advancing \u00d8rsted\u2019s 8.1\u00a0GW offshore wind construction\u00a0programme,\u00a0which will take the company to a total of\u00a0more than 18\u00a0GW\u00a0installed offshore wind capacity upon completion.<\/p>\n<p>Borkum\u00a0Riffgrund\u00a03\u00a0is \u00d8rsted\u2019s sixth operational offshore wind farm in\u00a0Germany, following\u00a0the\u00a0253\u00a0MW Gode Wind 3 project, which was commissioned in early 2025\u00a0and is also\u00a0jointly owned by \u00d8rsted and Nuveen. \u00d8rsted is Germany\u2019s leading offshore wind operator, accounting for approximately 25\u00a0% of the country\u2019s installed offshore wind capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Nuveen Infrastructure is one of the largest infrastructure investment managers globally with over USD 40 billion\u00a0in\u00a0assets under management.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Harnett, Chief\u00a0Construction\u00a0Officer\u00a0at \u00d8rsted, said:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Borkum Riffgrund\u00a03 now operational, we\u2019ve delivered a landmark project for Germany and European offshore wind while making further progress on our 8.1\u00a0GW construction portfolio. It was a true collective effort by highly dedicated suppliers and an \u00d8rsted project team, drawing on the company\u2019s expertise and extensive experience in handling large-scale offshore wind projects. With our sixth wind farm now operational in the German North Sea, we further consolidate our market-leading position, while emphasising the true capabilities that offshore wind energy brings for advancing the German\u00a0Energiewende.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Powering the decarbonisation of German industry<br \/>Borkum\u00a0Riffgrund\u00a03 is supported by several long-term corporate power purchase agreements\u00a0which \u00d8rsted has signed with industrial and technology customers,\u00a0thereby\u00a0producing\u00a0reliable power for\u00a0data\u00a0centres,\u00a0retailers, and the chemical industry. Offtake agreements totalling 786\u00a0MW have been entered into with Amazon (350\u00a0MW), BASF (186\u00a0MW), Covestro (100\u00a0MW), Energie-Handels-Gesellschaft\/REWE Group (100\u00a0MW), and Google (50\u00a0MW). The contracts range from 10 to 25\u00a0years in duration,\u00a0contributing\u00a0to German energy independence\u00a0and security of supply.<\/p>\n<p>European supply chain\u00a0and local value creation<br \/>Borkum\u00a0Riffgrund\u00a03 is\u00a0located\u00a0about 72\u00a0km off the coast in the German North Sea and covers an area of approx. 75\u00a0km\u00b2.\u00a0A total of 83\u00a0wind turbines, each with a rated capacity of 11\u00a0MW, have been installed at the offshore wind farm.\u00a0The project has mobilised a broad European supply chain,\u00a0leveraging\u00a0wind turbines and foundations from Germany and Denmark, cables from Germany and France, and installation vessels from the Netherlands and Belgium.\u00a0About 100\u00a0German\u00a0companies\u00a0have been contracted\u00a0for\u00a0the construction of the wind farm.<\/p>\n<p>With the addition of Borkum Riffgrund 3, \u00d8rsted\u2019s installed offshore wind power capacity in Germany increases to around 2.5 GW, enough to supply the equivalent of approx. 2.5 million households with renewable electricity.
