A Turkish court has ordered the arrest<\/a> of journalist \u0130rem Delice under the country\u2019s controversial disinformation law after prosecutors challenged her earlier release over a social media post headlined \u201cErdo\u011fan died\u201d that referred to a local woman who shared the president\u2019s surname, Turkish media reported.<\/p>\n

Delice, a reporter for the local Ayd\u0131n Denge newspaper in western Turkey, was detained<\/a> last week along with the newspaper\u2019s legal representative, Emin Ayd\u0131n, managing editor Ye\u015fim \u00dclker and reporter \u0130slam Kele\u015f on suspicion of \u201cpublicly disseminating misleading information\u201d under Article 217\/A of the Turkish Penal Code.<\/p>\n

The prosecutor\u2019s office sought the arrest of all four journalists, but a criminal magistrate of peace initially released them under judicial supervision.<\/p>\n

The Ayd\u0131n Chief Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office subsequently objected to the decision, prompting a new detention order for Delice. She was taken before a criminal magistrate of peace, who ordered her arrest.<\/p>\n

The investigation concerns a Facebook post by Ayd\u0131n Denge announcing the death of G\u00fcl\u015fen Erdo\u011fan. The post featured a black image bearing the words \u201cErdo\u011fan Vefat Etti\u201d (Erdo\u011fan died), while the accompanying report identified the deceased as G\u00fcl\u015fen Erdo\u011fan.<\/p>\n

Ayd\u0131n Denge said<\/a> Delice had posted the item on social media and that the shortened wording was used because G\u00fcl\u015fen Erdo\u011fan\u2019s full name did not fit the template used for the image. The newspaper said the post concerned a death announcement and denied any intention to refer to President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan.<\/p>\n

Introduced in 2022, Article 217\/A of the Turkish Penal Code, commonly known as the disinformation law, requires prison sentences of one to three years for those found guilty of publicly spreading false information in a way that causes concern, fear or panic among the public.<\/p>\n

The law has prompted widespread criticism from press freedom and rights groups, which say its vague wording gives authorities broad powers to investigate and prosecute journalists and social media users over reporting and online commentary.<\/p>\n

According to Expression Interrupted, a press freedom monitoring group, 19 journalists\u00a0are<\/a>\u00a0currently behind bars in Turkey.
