Credit: Lance Bellers\/Shutterstock.com. <\/p>\n<p class=\"drop-cap\">\u00d8rsted has commenced commercial operations at Borkum Riffgrund 3, a 913MW offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.<\/p>\n<p>The project, co-owned by \u00d8rsted and Nuveen Infrastructure, is said to be one of the largest offshore projects currently operating in Germany.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.power-technology.com\/wp-content\/themes\/goodlife-wp-B2B\/assets\/img\/globaldata_marketing_solutions_logo.svg\" alt=\"\"\/> Discover B2B Marketing That Performs <\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tCombine business intelligence and editorial excellence to reach engaged professionals across 36 leading media platforms.\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globaldatamarketingsolutions.com\/\" class=\"gms-find-out-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFind out more <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Located around 72km from the German coastline, Borkum Riffgrund 3 consists of 83 wind turbines, each with a rated capacity of 11MW, and spans approximately 75km\u00b2.<\/p>\n<p>The commissioning of the facility forms a key part of \u00d8rsted\u2019s 8.1GW offshore wind construction programme, which will bring the company\u2019s total installed offshore wind capacity to more than 18GW once completed.<\/p>\n<p>With Borkum Riffgrund 3, \u00d8rsted\u2019s installed offshore wind power capacity in Germany now totals around 2.5GW.<\/p>\n<p>According to the company, this capacity is enough to provide renewable electricity to around 2.5 million households.<\/p>\n<p>\u00d8rsted chief construction officer Patrick Harnett said: \u201cWith Borkum Riffgrund 3 now operational, we have delivered a landmark project for Germany and European offshore wind while making further progress on our 8.1GW construction portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe project demonstrates how offshore wind at scale can bolster energy security across Germany and Europe by powering businesses and homes. We remain committed to building out offshore wind in Germany and Europe, our core market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStable and predictable regulatory frameworks are essential to enabling further offshore wind investments that can strengthen energy resilience and sustain jobs across Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This marks \u00d8rsted\u2019s sixth operational offshore wind farm in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The new wind farm supplies energy under several long-term corporate power purchase agreements.<\/p>\n<p>A combined 786MW from the wind farm is contracted to Amazon (350MW), BASF (186MW), Covestro (100MW), Energie-Handels-Gesellschaft\/REWE Group (100MW) and Google (50MW).<\/p>\n<p>The agreements, which have terms of between ten and 25 years, are intended to deliver electricity to sectors such as data centres, retail and chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>Borkum Riffgrund 3 was developed with support from a wide European supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>Wind turbines and foundations were supplied from Germany and Denmark, cables from Germany and France, and installation vessels from the Netherlands and Belgium.<\/p>\n<p>Around 100 German companies were awarded contracts to support the wind farm\u2019s construction.<\/p>\n<p>The company is responsible for roughly 25% of Germany\u2019s installed offshore wind capacity, with operations and maintenance managed from Norden-Norddeich and Emden in Lower Saxony.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2025, the project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.power-technology.com\/news\/orsted-borkum-riffgrund-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">commenced power generation<\/a>, supplying its first electricity to the German grid.<\/p>\n<p>                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.power-technology.com\/wp-content\/themes\/goodlife-wp-B2B\/assets\/images\/newsletter-new.svg\" alt=\"Email newsletter icon\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n                    Sign up for our daily news round-up!<br \/>\n                    Give your business an edge with our leading industry insights.\n                <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Borkum Riffgrund 3 consists of 83 wind turbines, each with a rated capacity of 11MW.
