For the first time in recent history, Danish \u2060conscripts have been deployed to \u2060Greenland<\/a>, as Denmark<\/a> moves to \u2060bolster its presence in the Arctic after US demands to acquire the territory.US President Donald Trump<\/a> has repeatedly sought to acquire the semi-autonomous Danish island, citing national security concerns and accusing Copenhagen of neglecting Arctic defence. Denmark and \u200cGreenland have firmly rejected the idea.<\/p>\n

The conscripts are part of the first cohort under Denmark\u2019s new extended conscription programme, aimed at producing soldiers able to operate in one of the kingdom\u2019s most strategically important and challenging regions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt shows presence that we\u2019re here and not just thinking of our own skin. And also thinking of the \u2060people in Greenland,\u201d 19-year-old conscript David said.<\/p>\n

Copenhagen has pledged billions of dollars to strengthen Arctic \u200cdefences after Denmark\u2019s defence minister acknowledged years of underinvestment in the region.<\/p>\n
