{"id":158406,"date":"2026-09-03T08:41:08","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T08:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/158406\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T08:41:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T08:41:08","slug":"tallinn-black-nights-festival-focus-on-baltics-for-30th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/158406\/","title":{"rendered":"Tallinn Black Nights Festival: Focus on Baltics for 30th Anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTo celebrate its 30th anniversary, the <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/tallinn-black-nights-film-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tallinn-black-nights-film-festival\" data-tag=\"tallinn-black-nights-film-festival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival<\/a> (also known as P\u00d6FF), the largest and only A-list festival in the Baltics, is turning the spotlight on Baltic Cinema, with the backing from the <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/estonian-film-institute\/\" id=\"auto-tag_estonian-film-institute\" data-tag=\"estonian-film-institute\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Estonian Film Institute<\/a>, National Film Centre of Latvia and <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/lithuanian-film-centre\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lithuanian-film-centre\" data-tag=\"lithuanian-film-centre\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lithuanian Film Centre<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cBaltic cinema has always been an essential part of P\u00d6FF,\u201c stated Triin Tramberg, P\u00d6FF long-time film curator who will for the first time serve as artistic director in lieu of festival founder <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/tiina-lokk\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tiina-lokk\" data-tag=\"tiina-lokk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tiina Lokk<\/a>, now fully-focused on her CEO duties and strategic issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile reiterating past achievements such as the launch of the Baltic Film Competition in 2008 and Doc@P\u00d6PP competition in 2025, Tramberg said this year\u2019s Baltic Focus will further draw international attention to Baltic films, but also to the \u201cremarkable talent behind them.\u201c\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Baltic countries may be small individually, but together they form a dynamic and increasingly visible film region,\u201c she pointed out, referring notably to the first ever Oscar from the region for Latvia\u2019s animation pic \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/flow\/\" id=\"auto-tag_flow\" data-tag=\"flow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Flow<\/a>\u201c in 2025, Sundance Best Direction Award to Estonia\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/smoke-sauna-sisterhood\/\" id=\"auto-tag_smoke-sauna-sisterhood\" data-tag=\"smoke-sauna-sisterhood\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Smoke Sauna Sisterhood<\/a>\u201c in 2023 and Locarno\u2019s top Golden Leopard Award to Lithuania\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/toxic\/\" id=\"auto-tag_toxic\" data-tag=\"toxic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toxic<\/a>\u201c in 2024. More recent examples of prestigious fest bows take in the Cannes Un Certain Regard entry \u201cUlya\u201c by Latvian filmmaker Viesturs Kairi\u0161s and a Cannes Special Screening for \u201cVesna\u201c by Lithuanian-born Rostislav Kirpicenko.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAt this year\u2019s P\u00d6FF, the focus will be both on today\u2019s most outstanding recent films and co-productions from the Baltics across fiction and documentary, and on past film pearls, with retrospectives including two to four landmark features from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThrough the festival\u2019s influential Industry@Tallinn &amp; Baltic Event, attended by over 800 delegates in 2025, the Focus will further highlight upcoming Baltic film gems, the region\u2019s top film professionals, infrastructure and tax incentives (up to 30% for Lithuania, 40% for Estonia and 50% for Latvia) that have boosted foreign filming over the past decade. Indeed examples of Baltic shores used as go-to destination for\u00a0Hollywood and Euro pics abound,\u00a0from\u00a0\u201cTenet\u201c and \u201cThe Agency\u201d\u00a0in Estonia and \u201cStranger Things\u201d and \u201cSisi\u201d\u00a0in Lithuania, to \u201cThe Chronology of Water\u201d and\u00a0 Venice-bound \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/woman-unknown\/\" id=\"auto-tag_woman-unknown\" data-tag=\"woman-unknown\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Woman Unknown<\/a>\u201c in Latvia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBaltics Global Reach<br \/>Commenting on the Baltics Focus and P\u00d6FF at 30, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/edith-sepp\/\" id=\"auto-tag_edith-sepp\" data-tag=\"edith-sepp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Edith Sepp<\/a>, CEO at the Estonian Film Institute said, \u201cFor\u00a0the Estonian Film Institute,\u00a0as well as\u00a0for all Estonians, P\u00d6FF turning 30 is something quite extraordinary! The festival has grown alongside the modern Estonian film industry, and in many ways,\u00a0we have grown stronger together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201c30 years ago, it would have been almost impossible to imagine Tallinn becoming a place where the international film industry shoots its films, and then every November gathers\u00a0to celebrate cinema.\u00a0Today, just as the Estonian film industry is not only Estonian but very international and focuses on co-productions, P\u00d6FF together with Baltic Event is no longer simply a local festival. It is one of the platforms through which Estonia speaks to the world. And putting the spotlight on the Baltics this year is particularly important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cEstonia, Latvia and Lithuania together have a stronger voice in European cinema and beyond. We all have very distinctive filmmakers, stories and cinematic cultures, and we need a platform like P\u00d6FF that allows our films and filmmakers to shine internationally,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSharing Sepp\u2019s views, the head of the Lithuanian Film Centre Laimonas Ubavi\u010dius said,\u00a0\u201cwe can take great pride in the close collaboration between the three Baltic countries and in how much our film industries have grown and strengthened. This is reflected in the increasing international recognition of Baltic cinema, the growing confidence in our producers and the emergence of a new generation of filmmakers with distinctive voices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe presentation of co-productions such as\u00a0\u201cUlya\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cVesna\u201d\u00a0at this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival is just one example of what this sustained partnership can achieve.
