As India and Belgium signed a slew of defence cooperation agreements, Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken assured India that it would not share sensitive technology with Pakistan, according to The Times of India.<\/p>\n
Francken is accompanying Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever on a visit to India. He held talks with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday and jointly presided over the signing of the agreements.<\/p>\n
Rajnath told Francken that Belgium’s commitment not to share sensitive technology with Pakistan remains essential for the bilateral relationship to grow. The Belgian defence minister assured him that “till the time he is the defence minister of Belgium, there is no question of any cooperation with Pakistan”.<\/p>\n
“In response to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh asking the Belgian Defence Minister to keep India’s sensitivity in mind regarding transfer of sensitive technology to Pakistan during their meeting on Thursday morning, the Belgian minister responded that they are clear in their mind and they have chosen India without any doubt in mind,” a source told the ToI.<\/p>\n
This is not the first time India has secured such a commitment. The source said Francken’s assurance was similar to the response given by Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and that “this shows that European countries have clearly chosen India, vindicating India\u2019s stance”.<\/p>\n

The assurance comes as India and Belgium signed a slew of defence agreements during the visit, including government-to-government accords as well as agreements between industries in the two countries.<\/p>\n
India and Belgium signed a defence framework agreement, while the Belgian Security and Defence Industry (BDSI) and the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) separately signed a memorandum of understanding. Private-sector companies from the two countries also signed separate agreements.<\/p>\n
The Belgian government said there were opportunities for cooperation with India “in weapon systems, ammunition, radar, electro-optical sensors, command and control, and counter-drone systems. These are precisely areas in which Belgian industry has particularly strong expertise”.<\/p>\n
“With this visit, we are reaping the benefits of what we have built over the past year. Every project that connects our technology with India\u2019s growing defence industry strengthens both our security and economic position,” said Francken.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Defence said the following MoUs were signed during the visit between Indian and Belgian companies:<\/p>\n
\n \tLarsen & Toubro Limited (India) and Exail Robotics SAS (France) and EXAIL Robotics (Belgium);
\n \tKalyani Strategic Systems Ltd (India) and FN Herstal (Belgium);
\n \tTembo Classic Engineering Pvt Ltd (India) and Lachauss\u00e9e SA (Belgium);
\n \tIndia Optel Ltd (India) and OIP (Belgium);
\n \tKrishna Industries Pvt Ltd (India) and Pitagone (Belgium);
\n \tDGVK Enterprises Private Limited (India) and Sol1 BV (Belgium); and
\n \tKalyani Strategic Systems Ltd (India) and Thales Belgium SA and Thales India Pvt Ltd.
