{"id":159476,"date":"2026-09-04T12:39:11","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T12:39:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/159476\/"},"modified":"2026-09-04T12:39:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T12:39:11","slug":"denmark-plans-to-send-rejected-asylum-seekers-to-non-eu-return-hubs-by-2027","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/159476\/","title":{"rendered":"Denmark plans to send rejected asylum seekers to non-EU return hubs by 2027"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Denmark said it hoped to begin sending rejected asylum seekers to non-European Union \u201creturn hubs\u201d as early as 2027, ahead of a Friday meeting of five countries leading European efforts to establish such centers outside the continent.<\/p>\n<p>In June, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eu-migration-deport-asylum-return-hub-detention-c66ca47aa73c0d0ad3477c8c23cebc50\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European lawmakers voted<\/a> to allow member states to set up migrant detention centers outside the EU, known as \u201creturn hubs.\u201d Any EU nation can now negotiate on its own or in small coalitions to deport migrants not to their home countries but to facilities yet to be built in third countries, outside the 27-nation bloc.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot accept that people without a legal stay continue to reside in our respective countries,\u201d Danish Foreign Minister Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen said on Friday as he welcomed ministers from Germany, Austria, The Netherlands and Greece to Copenhagen to discuss progress on establishing the deportation centers outside Europe. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd at the same time we would like to work together with third countries to be able to give irregular migrants a second chance in a partner country,\u201d Rasmussen said. <\/p>\n<p>The five countries have been negotiating with governments mainly in Africa to host sites to hold rejected asylum seekers, pioneering the initiative for the whole of the EU. <\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Danish broadcaster DR published on Friday, Denmark\u2019s Immigration and Integration Minister Morten B\u00f8dskov said he hoped that the non-EU return hubs would already be in place in 2027.
