Denmark has publicly expressed its support for the autonomy proposal put forward by Morocco as a viable basis for achieving a consensual solution between the parties to the conflict. This stance broadens global backing for the Moroccan initiative and strengthens the prospects for a peaceful resolution with the endorsement of the UN Security Council.

Denmark’s role, as an active member of the Security Council, takes on particular significance at this current stage of the negotiation process regarding the Sahara. The stance expressed by the Danish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, during an official visit by the Moroccan Minister Nasser Bourita, signals support aimed at fostering a serious and inclusive dialogue between Morocco and the Polisario Front, with a view to reaching a definitive agreement based on the regional autonomy proposed by Rabat.

This support not only strengthens Morocco’s political position, but also reflects a growing international consensus to resolve one of Africa’s outstanding colonial legacies, by promoting political dialogue on modern and pragmatic grounds.

Denmark’s support for the Moroccan proposal

Denmark has welcomed the proposal for autonomy put forward by Morocco as a serious and credible framework for resolving the Western Sahara conflict. This assessment was expressed by the Danish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, who highlighted the importance of this proposal within the United Nations process.

The Moroccan plan maintains that the Sahara can function as an autonomous region within the Moroccan state, with extensive administrative decentralisation and political, social and economic powers. Denmark praised this proposal as a serious and fundamental contribution to the ongoing negotiations, advocating that it should form the basis for a mutually agreed settlement between the parties involved.

Denmark on the Security Council and its impact

Denmark’s favourable stance is particularly significant because the country is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. This means that its support helps to strengthen the legitimacy and international scope of the Moroccan plan, especially following the formal adoption of Resolution No. 2797, which supports peaceful progress in the conflict.

Furthermore, the Danish position reinforces the perception that there is an emerging consensus amongst key international actors to base the solution to the Sahara issue on the autonomy proposal. This support is crucial in the run-up to the scheduled international meetings, at which the UN hopes to make progress towards a clearer and more effective dialogue between Morocco and the Polisario Front.

Meeting between the Moroccan and Danish delegations in Rabat. Photo: Maroc Diplomatie

Strategic partnership between Denmark and Morocco

Support for the Moroccan proposal for the Sahara also forms part of the consolidation of strategic bilateral relations between Denmark and Morocco. During the meeting in Copenhagen between the two foreign ministers, the desire to strengthen this alliance through a shared agenda encompassing political, economic and migration cooperation was emphasised.

Denmark regards Morocco as a reliable partner and a driving force for regional development in Africa. In this regard, both countries plan to step up business exchanges, particularly in sectors such as water technologies, renewable energyand agriculture. The new partnership also aims to strengthen cooperation on migration issues, a matter of particular interest to Denmark and its relations with North Africa.

International implications of Denmark’s backing

Denmark’s endorsement of Morocco’s proposal for the Sahara not only represents formal support, but also reinforces the consensus that Morocco has built globally regarding its sovereignty and autonomy plan. This international trend could facilitate a political solution to a conflict that has caused tensions and harm to the region for several decades.

Furthermore, the recognition of a solution based on autonomy opens the door to a pragmatic understanding in whichrespect for Morocco’s territorial integrity and the legitimate rights of the Sahrawi people can coexist. The backing of countries such as Denmark helps this approach gain traction in international deliberations and strengthens the expectation that the UN can guide an effective process towards a definitive agreement.

Denmark’s support for the Moroccan proposal Denmark on the Security Council and its impact Strategic partnership between Denmark…

[2
14880,27,26,15518,74944,39724,3278,58579,58581,58580,25048,74943,74945,35251
post-159776","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-denmark","tag-danemark","tag-danmark","tag-denmark","tag-dinamarca","tag-maroc","tag-marruecos","tag-morocco","tag-politica-marruecos","tag-politics-morocco","tag-politique-maroc","tag-portada","tag-sahara","tag-sahara-ouest","tag-western-sahara
["GET
