Two full-time Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory firefighters took their oath of office Friday at the Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety meeting after completing their probationary year.
Before giving Miles Waters and Dylan Childers their oaths separately, Warsaw Mayor Jeff Grose had all the emergency services personnel present stand up. He told them, \u201cI really appreciate your service to the community. I hope you can hold on to that. I\u2019ve told you guys that countless times. My dad, former law enforcement officer … (would tell me) \u2018Jeff, these guys are running into trouble when we\u2019re running away from it.\u2019 As you have the privilege of accepting them into what we would call public service, don\u2019t ever forget that. So, A, thank you for all that you do, those of you that are here. And, then, also, thank you, we have two young men who are going to step forward today and tell us that they are willing to serve and give back to this community, and I greatly appreciate it.\u201d
Waters took the oath first, which states, \u201cI, Miles Waters, do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the state of Indiana, and that I will commit to faithfully discharge my duties as a firefighter of the Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory. To the citizens of the territory, I give my commitment to fulfill this position to the best of my ability, both promoting and protecting, with the best interest of the Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, in accordance with the territory\u2019s policies.\u201d
He, Grose and Fire Chief Joel Shilling signed the paperwork. And then Waters said and did something that may have been a little unexpected.
\u201cSo, since I lateral backed, because I was here before, and these guys accepted me back, I want all of them\u201d to pin his badge on his uniform. \u201cEvery single one of them,\u201d he stated. And all the firefighters present did just that.
Childers then took his oath and had his family pin his badge on his uniform.
Pictures were taken and hugs were given to conclude the ceremony.
Later in the meeting, Warsaw Human Resource Director Denny Harlan presented the new hire and change in payroll report, which the Board of Works approved. It included Childers\u2019 $2,600 biweekly pay as of Sept. 13 as he\u2019s reached the end of the probationary period. Waters\u2019 pay was approved at the last Board of Works meeting.
The report also included two part-time new hire firefighters at $14.97 per hour, beginning Sept. 13. They are Landyn Iden and Ross Armey.
