The work, created by artist Liuda Jaruševičiūtė Stankevičienė, draws inspiration from the literary world of the renowned Lithuanian writer Žemaitė.

A Living Mural

Located on the walls of the buildings at Gediminas Ave. 29 and 29A, the mural covers an area equivalent to one and a half basketball courts. The artist utilized a mixed technique of painting and graphics, applying small brushes to capture intricate details of the misty forest. The project, which began in September 2025, was completed in stages due to weather conditions.

                                Integration with Nature

The mural is designed to interact with its environment rather than exist as a static image. The artist incorporated the existing trees of Žemaitė Square into the composition, allowing their branches and shadows to overlap with the painted elements. As a result, the artwork changes with the seasons: summer foliage hides parts of the painting, while the changing light and leaf density in autumn and winter reveal different layers of the forest.

Artistic Dialogue

The composition also preserves a 2016 portrait of Frida Kahlo by set designer Paulė Bocullaitė. By integrating this existing work into the new forest scene, the artists created a dialogue between two iconic female figures, exploring themes of authentic female representation and social norms in art.

                                Visitor Information

“Bukantės miškas” is now a permanent feature of the renovated Žemaitė Square. To help visitors engage with the site, an information board detailing the life and work of the writer Žemaitė, prepared in consultation with researcher Dr. Žydronė Kolevinskienė, will be installed nearby.

A formal opening event for the mural is planned for late September 2026 in Žemaitė Square. The Vilnius City Municipality will announce the exact date closer to the event, where visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about the history of the project and meet the artist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the mural located?

The mural is located on the building walls at Gediminas Ave. 29 and 29A, within Žemaitė Square in Vilnius.

When is the official opening?

The opening is scheduled for late September 2026.
