{"id":160334,"date":"2026-09-05T21:49:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-05T21:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/160334\/"},"modified":"2026-09-05T21:49:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-05T21:49:10","slug":"prince-william-to-attend-king-haralds-funeral-in-norway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/160334\/","title":{"rendered":"Prince William to attend King Harald&#8217;s funeral in Norway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Prince of Wales will attend the funeral of King Harald V of Norway on Wednesday in Oslo, Buckingham Palace has announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Also going to the funeral, in a personal capacity, is Princess Anne, who is godmother to <a data-ylk=\"slk:Norway&#039;s new monarch, King Haakon VIII.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cp841114eg6o?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Byahoo.north.america%5D-%5Blink%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Norway&#8217;s new monarch, King Haakon VIII.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The late King Harald, a popular, modernising figure who had been on the Norwegian throne for 35 years, died last month at the age of 89.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Royal sources say Prince William&#8217;s attendance, representing his father King Charles, follows the convention that the monarch does not usually go to the funeral of another head of state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Large crowds are expected for the farewell to King Harald on 9 September, with a funeral procession to be followed by a service at Oslo Cathedral.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Thousands have queued to pay their respects to the late king, during his lying in state in the chapel of the Royal Palace in the Norwegian capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">At the funeral, alongside Prince William, will be the widowed Queen Sonja, members of the Norwegian royal family including new King Haakon VIII, and other European royals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The service will be followed by a private burial in Norway&#8217;s royal mausoleum in the Akershus Fortress.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Mourners queue to pay their respects to King Harald in Oslo in Norway\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/bbc_us_articles_995\/3bef6a9e5f6db9ec2fd7b3111011348c.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>People have queued to pay their respects to King Harald at the Royal Palace Chapel [Reuters]<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Among the tributes to King Harald was an emotional televised speech by his son King Haakon, who said: &#8220;Thank you for being such a good dad.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Harald had been seen as a down to earth &#8220;people&#8217;s king&#8221; who had helped to modernise the monarchy, broken with tradition by marrying a commoner and served as a unifying figure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">His son said he represented the values of a &#8220;society built on law and justice, where everyone is of equal value&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">King Charles&#8217;s message praised his cousin King Harald for serving his people with &#8220;unwavering dedication, guiding Norway through times of great change with warmth and humility&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Four people stand smiling at the camera in ski jackets and woollen hats.
