Princess Anne will be among the mourners at the funeral of King
\nHarald of Norway this week and for a very important reason.<\/p>\n
While the Prince of Wales is representing King Charles at the
\nsolemn ceremony in Oslo, the Princess Royal will be heading there
\nin a personal capacity.<\/p>\n
Anne is going to support her godson, Harald\u2019s son, who became
\nKing Haakon VIII of Norway on the death of his father.<\/p>\n
The Princess Royal stood sponsor to King Haakon at his baptism
\nin 1973. Her inclusion in the list of godparents underlined the
\nclose links between the Royal Family and their Norewgian
\ncousins.<\/p>\n
King Harald\u2019s father, King Olav, was a close friend of Queen
\nElizabeth II and Prince Philip. His bond with King George VI,
\nElizabeth II\u2019s father, was cemented during World War II when Olav
\nand his father, King Haakon VII, lived in London after the Nazi
\noccupation of Norway. King Harald went to the US with his mother
\nand two sisters.<\/p>\n
In fact, the tie between the two families are so strong that
\nwhen Elizabeth II had her first child in 1948 she named him after
\nKing Haakon VII of Norway. King Haakon VII had been born Prince
\nCarl of Denmark and was known to his family in London as \u2018Uncle
\nCharlie\u2019.<\/p>\n
King Charles paid a moving tribute to his \u2018dear cousin Harald\u2019
\nwhen the 89 year old king died on August 28. Charles III praised
\nHarald\u2019s service and devotion to duty in a touching message.<\/p>\n
As is usual, the Monarch will be represented at the funeral of
\nhis fellow Sovereign by the heir to the throne. This has been the
\npractice since the reign of King Edward II with Charles himself
\ncarrying out the duty for Elizabeth II many times in her long
\nreign.<\/p>\n
Prince William will travel to Oslo for the ceremony on September
\n9 which takes place at Oslo Cathedral.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s also the first day of the new term at Eton, Prince George\u2019s
\nnew school, although it is likely that new pupils like the prince
\nwill arrivce in the days before. George is also just 20 minutes
\naway from his family home at Forest Lodge on the Windsor Estate.
\nWith Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8, returning to
\nLambrook for the new term there, it\u2019s unlikely that the Princess of
\nWales will be at the funeral in Oslo.<\/p>\n
King Carl XV Gustaf and Queen Silvia, who were very close to
\nKing Harald, will be there along with the heir to the Swedish
\nthrone, Crown Princess Victoria. King Frederik X of Denmark will
\nattend with Queen Mary and Crown Prince Christian, 20. Frederik\u2019s
\nother, Queen Margrethe, will also be present \u2013 she shared a long
\nfriendship with King Harald and his wife, Queen Sonja.<\/p>\n
King Haakon will lead the Norwegian royal family at the funeral.
\nHis wife, Queen Mette-Marit, will also be there \u2013 last week, she
\nhad to miss King Haakon\u2019s formal swearing in at the Norwegian
\nparliament after complications following her lung transplant which
\ntook place earlier this summer.<\/p>\n
Queen Mette-Marit\u2019s son, Marius Borg Hoiby, will also attend. He
\nis currently serving a four year prison sentence under house arrest
\nafter being convicted of a number of offences including two counts
\nof rape.<\/p>\n
King Harald\u2019s coffin is currently lying in state in the Royal
\nPalace in Oslo. Tributes continue to be paid to the man who ruled
\nNorway for 35 years and who remained hugely popular throughout his
