Following the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, protests against the victorious far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) were reported from several German cities, police said Sunday evening.<\/p>\n
In Frankfurt, around 2,500 people demonstrated, calling for an investigation into whether the AfD – the clear winner of the election – should be banned, police confirmed.<\/p>\n
In Berlin, too, hundreds of people took to the streets in the evening with similar demands. Demonstrations were also held in Mainz for the same reason.<\/p>\n
A protest march passed through Berlin’s government district in the evening under the slogan “Defend democracy! – Ban the AfD now!”, ending at the official Saxony-Anhalt building in central Berlin.<\/p>\n
The police stated that the number of demonstrators was in the low three figures. Demonstrations also took place at the Brandenburg Gate.<\/p>\n
A larger rally against the AfD has been registered for Monday evening at the Brandenburg Gate. According to the police, 5,000 people are expected from 6 pm (1600 GMT) onwards.<\/p>\n
Why are demonstrators calling for AfD ban?<\/p>\n
“The approach of trying to weaken far-right forces through political work alone has failed,” Philipp Jacks, Frankfurt chairman of the confederation of German Trade Unions (DGB), explaining why demonstrators want the authorities to look into banning the AfD.<\/p>\n
“The AfD is already officially classified as a confirmed far-right party in several federal states, including Saxony-Anhalt,” he added.<\/p>\n
