EU boosts Greenland funding as Trump pushes annexation: Why it matters\u00a0<\/p>\n

The European Commission is set to strengthen ties with Greenland on the grounds of a major funding drive in the midst of Trump\u2019s annexation drive. <\/p>\n

As reported by Reuters, the president Ursula von der Leyen is expected to unveil a boost in EU investments in Greenland and closer political ties with the Danish Arctic territory. <\/p>\n

Ursula von der Leyen is currently on a two-day visit to Greenland \u201cas a show of support for the governments of Denmark and Greenland.\u201d <\/p>\n

The investment will be poured into various sectors including critical minerals, satellite communications and renewable energy in Greenland. <\/p>\n

According to the EU president, the package would be \u201csubstantial\u201d but she did not disclose any information regarding this. <\/p>\n

EU\u2019s Arctic policy <\/p>\n

The European Commission is currently updating its 2021 Arctic policy to place security, defense, and geopolitical strategy at its core, moving past its original focus primarily on climate change and raw materials.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis update is necessary to maintain that the policy is relevant and effective in addressing the evolving challenges and opportunities in the Arctic region,\u201d the EU spokesperson said. <\/p>\n

Arctic at the crossroad of global competition <\/p>\n

The Arctic territory is at the crossroads of global competition as China, Russia and the United States are vying to expand their footprint in the territory.<\/p>\n

Russia has upped the ante by making the Arctic more militarized in the High North and China has expanded its economic footprint through its Polar Silk Road. <\/p>\n

Experts advocate for stronger EU-NATO coordination, such as aligning with NATO\u2019s Arctic Sentry initiative, to safeguard critical infrastructure like subsea cables and counter hybrid threats.<\/p>\n

Linda Solstrand Dahlberg, a senior representative of the Arctic University of Norway, said, \u201cA secure Arctic is inextricably linked with European security.”<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s annexation push for Greenland <\/p>\n

Earlier this year, President Donald Trump sparked a drive aimed at exerting US control over Greenland while arguing that Denmark could not defend it. <\/p>\n

However, the European countries asserted that Greenland is a part of Danish territory, leading to escalating tensions between the Trump administration and Europe. <\/p>\n

Tensions simmered down when Trump and other countries including Denmark and Greenland agreed to hold talks to resolve the issue. <\/p>\n
