COPENHAGEN, Sept 7 \u2014 Novo Nordisk said on Monday that in a \u200blate-stage trial, 40.4% of children aged 6 to under 12 treated with semaglutide, the \u200cactive ingredient in its blockbuster weight-loss drug Wegovy, were no longer \u2060classified as having \u200bobesity after 68 weeks, \u2060assuming full adherence to the treatment.<\/p>\n
All patients enrolled \u200cin the trial, \u200ccalled STEP Young, received lifestyle modification throughout \u2060the trial, including a \u2060reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, Novo said in a statement.<\/p>\n
“We are encouraged by the positive STEP Young results and semaglutide’s potential to help children living with obesity who need medical \u200ctreatment, alongside lifestyle changes, \u200bto better manage their obesity,” Novo’s Chief Scientific Officer Martin Holst Lange said.<\/p>\n
Novo said the trial met its primary endpoint demonstrating superior body mass index reduction at week 68 in the group taking once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide compared with the \u200bplacebo group.<\/p>\n
The overall safety and tolerability of semaglutide \u200cwere consistent \u200cwith \u2060those seen in trials with adults and adolescents, it added.<\/p>\n
Prescriptions for GLP-1 weight-loss drugs among U.S. children under 12 have risen more than 300-fold since 2019, \u200ca study published \u200bFriday found, even though the \u200cdrugs are not \u2060approved \u200bfor that age group.<\/p>\n
