LONDON (AP) \u2014 U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s latest map-making exercise has rattled the North Atlantic.<\/p>\n
During a flurry of social media posts over the long holiday weekend, Trump posted a map showing the U.S. sprawling across all of North America and extending to Greenland and Iceland. The map was colored in the red, white and blue stars and stripes of the U.S. flag.<\/p>\n
The Truth Social post offered no explanation but recalled Trump\u2019s earlier talk of making Canada the 51st state and his repeated musings about taking over Greenland, Denmark\u2019s self-governing territory<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s disturbing and, in many ways, completely inappropriate,\u201d Danish Foreign Minister Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen told the national broadcaster DR on Tuesday. \u201cIt\u2019s obviously a sign that the U.S. president still harbors some kind of maximalist vision in his own mind. We need to rein that in.\u201d <\/p>\n Iceland\u2019s Foreign Secretary Thorgerdur Katr\u00edn Gunnarsd\u00f3ttir summoned U.S. Ambassador Billy Long to a meeting and said she made it clear that the post was unacceptable, national broadcaster R\u00daV said.<\/p>\n The Arctic states have been on edge since Trump ramped up his rhetoric at the start of the year about U.S. control of Greenland<\/a>.<\/p>\n His post came Monday as the European Union sought to reassure Greenland<\/a> with the promise of a stronger partnership and hundreds of millions of euros in investment following Trump\u2019s repeated threats<\/a>.<\/p>\n Iceland \u2014 just 180 miles (290 km) away \u2014 became alarmed when Trump mistakenly named their country four times<\/a> while speaking about his designs on Greenland.<\/p>\n Iceland is a NATO member, but the gaffe led its left-leaning coalition government to move up a referendum, originally planned for next year, on whether the country should resume long-stalled negotiations to become a member of the EU. <\/p>\n Voters rejected the measure<\/a> Aug. 30 that was promoted, in part, as an effort to strengthen ties with Europe to better insulate the country<\/a> from geopolitical instability.<\/a><\/p>\n Thousands of Icelanders also signed a petition urging the prime minister to reject Long as ambassador after he made a crack earlier this year about Iceland becoming the 52nd U.S. state and making him governor. Long apologized and took up his post in Reykjavik last month.<\/p>\n Trump has riled up Canada with frequent talk of it becoming a U.S. state, launching a trade war<\/a> with it and recently renaming Lake Ontario as \u201cLake America<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n
