The European Union is deepening its economic and political presence in the Arctic with an investment package worth approximately $232 million.<\/p>\n
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the funding during a visit to Nuuk. The package will be deployed in partnership with Greenland this year and next.<\/p>\n
The EU, Greenland and Denmark also signed a new Joint Declaration. The agreement broadens cooperation beyond established areas such as education and fisheries. It now covers clean energy, critical minerals, infrastructure, digital links, security and climate action.<\/p>\n

Arctic ties move up the political agenda<\/p>\n
Von der Leyen signed the declaration with Greenland Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.<\/p>\n
The agreement replaces a declaration adopted in 2015. Its wider scope reflects Greenland\u2019s growing importance to European economic security and Arctic policy.<\/p>\n
Priority areas include education, training, housing, research, civil protection and sustainable tourism. The partners will also work on fisheries, environmental protection, resilience and innovation.<\/p>\n
For Greenland, the package offers capital for infrastructure and services across a vast territory with dispersed communities. For the EU, it creates a framework for developing strategic supply chains and strengthening its position in a region facing increased geopolitical attention.<\/p>\n
Connectivity investment targets remote settlements<\/p>\n
Digital infrastructure is one of the package\u2019s central pillars. The EU will work with Greenlandic telecommunications provider Tusass to expand satellite capacity through European providers over five years.<\/p>\n
The Enhanced Satellite Connectivity project is designed to improve the speed, reliability and resilience of digital services. Remote settlements, schools and businesses are expected to benefit.<\/p>\n
The programme builds on existing EU support for connectivity along Greenland\u2019s west coast. Feasibility studies will also examine whether data centres could become commercially viable as local energy and communications infrastructure develops.<\/p>\n
That assessment will need to consider electricity demand, environmental pressures and the economic value retained within Greenland.<\/p>\n
