According to NASA Earthdata, this happens due to the instability of the iceberg as it moves forward. Though it’s a natural phenomenon, the concerning part is how expeditiously dense chunks of glaciers fall.

Science Daily reported the latest significant case of glacial calving. This occurred with the Petermann Glacier in Greenland on Aug. 4. The dimensions of the iceberg that broke off was 150 meters thick and 76.4 square kilometers in area, approximately the size of Manhattan.

This large-scale glacial calving brings into question why the calving of Petermann Glacier’s is significant to record. To answer this question, the geography of glacial surfaces needs to be understood. Petermann Glacier is an ice tongue; one of three major ones left in Greenland.

Ice tongues are essentially floating platforms of ice attached to the front of glaciers, like the glaciers in Antarctica. This unique quality alone makes this a record worthy event, as well as a checkpoint for the condition of the earth. This evaluation allows for a deeper dive into the causes of this phenomenon. According to Antarctic Glaciers, some include surface and basal melting of ice tongues and fragmentation in areas triggering pressure that cracks the ice.

As mentioned previously, researchers have been using Petermann Glacier as a checkpoint for the earth. Some aspects they examine include graphing out ocean and wind currents along with the effects on marine ecosystems by tracking the rate the loose icebergs melt with.

This event alerted researchers to keep a closer eye on Petermann’s Glacier as it alludes to an acceleration in ice loss. Especially with the structures of these glaciers getting progressively destabilized as each piece falls off or with additional fragments that can occur.

Petermann Glacier is at risk of being lost, and as a result will decrease the amount of ice sheets remaining on Earth. This would only add to the list of effects of global warming and the ongoing crisis.

Global warming continues to be a relevant topic with its deadly effects in glacially abundant lands.
