Harald\u2019s son, King Haakon VIII, and other senior royals walked behind the coffin, which was draped in the red Norwegian royal standard.<\/p>\n<p>Harald, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/8\/28\/norways-king-harald-v-dies-succeeded-by-son\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">died on August 28<\/a> aged 89, was Europe\u2019s oldest reigning monarch and had been on the throne for 35 years.<\/p>\n<p>He modernised the royal house but refused to follow the example of other elderly monarchs who have abdicated in recent years.
