Gov. Gen. Mary Simon, King Charles III\u2019s envoy in Canada, is in town for the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been working with Denmark and Greenland for many, many years,\u201d Simon told Politico. \u201cWe understand each other, and it\u2019s important to talk about<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/02\/05\/greenland-canada-consulate-nuuk-allies-00768198\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the lessons learned;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\"> the lessons learned<\/a> in each of our countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Avaaraq Olsen, the mayor of Nuuk, said she was grateful for the show of support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really important for us to know that we are not alone in this, that we actually have people from other countries who care about us,\u201d Olsen said. \u201cPeople are scared and they are more and more concerned. Because of Trump\u2019s statements, they get very worse and worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Canada is set to open a consulate in Greenland in a display of solidarity against President Trump's attempts to take over the island (AFP via Getty Images)\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"826\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770406090_141_0792da2af711f520210374b1b8b8ca36.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Canada is set to open a consulate in Greenland in a display of solidarity against President Trump&#8217;s attempts to take over the island (AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>The unveiling of Canada\u2019s diplomatic outpost comes during a period of heightened tension between the Trump administration and Greenland, Denmark and other NATO allies.<\/p>\n<p>In recent months, the 79-year-old Republican president has repeatedly called for Greenland to be part of the United States \u2014 a bid for territorial expansion that would rival the Louisiana Purchase.<\/p>\n<p>The White House previously refused to rule out the use of military force in acquiring the island, which is home to some 50,000 inhabitants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States needs Greenland for the purpose of <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/115893255826342514\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:National Security;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">National Security<\/a>,\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social on January 14. \u201cNATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES. Anything less than that is unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The leaders of Greenland and Denmark \u2014 as well as the heads of other NATO nations \u2014 have strongly opposed the president\u2019s aggressive posturing. Some compared it to Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s war of conquest in Ukraine, while others said it threatens to unravel the U.S.-led alliance that has been in place since World War II.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Greenland is today a part of the kingdom of Denmark. It is part of our territory, and it&#8217;s not for sale,&#8221; Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredriksen said earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Polls show that Trump\u2019s plans for Greenland are unpopular. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2026\/01\/29\/few-americans-support-trumps-proposed-takeover-of-greenland\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Fifty-eight percent of Americans;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Fifty-eight percent of Americans<\/a> oppose a U.S. takeover of the island, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey. Earlier in January, he had said he was slapping a 10 percent tariff on eight E.U. nations due to their opposition to American control of Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurther information will be made available as discussions progress,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>While tensions appear to have eased for the moment, the impact of Trump\u2019s Greenland bid may be long-lasting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know the old order is not coming back. We shouldn&#8217;t mourn it,\u201d Canadian Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/mark-carney-davos-speech-standing-ovation-world-order-trump-b2904200.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mark Carney;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Mark Carney<\/a> said during a speech at Davos last month.
