BERLIN – A driver was sent to a hospital following a rollover crash Sunday morning on Route 5 that caused the surrounding neighborhood to lose power for several hours, a fire official said.<\/p>\n
Berlin Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jonn Massirio said crews were called to the one-vehicle accident at 11:24 a.m. in the area of Route 5 and Woodruff Circle. He said the vehicle left the roadway, struck and downed a utility pole, and then rolled over.<\/p>\n
Massirio said the driver was transported to a hospital for evaluation. He said the northbound lanes of Route 5 were closed until about 2 p.m.<\/p>\n
Berlin police Lt. Shawn Solek said the driver was a 24-year-old man who suffered minor injuries. Solek said the crash is still being investigated, but speed appears to have been a contributing factor.<\/p>\n
Power was disrupted to the adjacent neighborhood, Massirio said, noting one lane remained closed while an Eversource crew worked to repair the pole and restore power.<\/p>\n
By 3:30 p.m., Eversource’s outage map listed no power issues in Berlin, down from about 150 customers without power after the crash, and the state Department of Transportation listed Route 5 as open.<\/p>\n
