The result broke her own <a href=\"https:\/\/justwomenssports.com\/reads\/boston-marathon-2026-results-sharon-lokedi-jess-mcclain-us-womens-record\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/justwomenssports.com\/reads\/boston-marathon-2026-results-sharon-lokedi-jess-mcclain-us-womens-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">course record<\/a> of 2:11:53 from 2023. Still, the Ethiopian <a href=\"https:\/\/justwomenssports.com\/reads\/rachel-entrekin-cocodona-250-ultramarathon-results\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/justwomenssports.com\/reads\/rachel-entrekin-cocodona-250-ultramarathon-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">distance runner<\/a> fell just short of the women&#8217;s world record after her stride broke down in the final 2 kilometers.<\/p>\n<p>Injury Derails Assefa&#8217;s World Record Run<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Berlin&#8217;s flat course has long been a target for record attempts, and through 40 kilometers, Assefa was on pace to run one. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her projected finish sat around 2:09:44 \u2014 well under Ruth Chepngetich&#8217;s world record of 2:09:56 from the 2024 Chicago Marathon. Then everything shifted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the final 2.2 kilometers, she covered the distance in eight minutes and four seconds, roughly half a minute per kilometer off her earlier pace. Her stride shortened visibly as she pushed toward the finish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The performance caps a dominant stretch for Assefa, who just 5 months earlier set the women&#8217;s-only marathon record with a 2:15:41 win at the London Marathon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with the late-race injury, Assefa&#8217;s time places her behind only Chepngetich and <a href=\"https:\/\/justwomenssports.com\/reads\/fotyen-tesfay-barcelona-marathon-debut-2026-second-fastest\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/justwomenssports.com\/reads\/fotyen-tesfay-barcelona-marathon-debut-2026-second-fastest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Fotyen Tesfay<\/a> (2:10:51) on the all-time women&#8217;s marathon <a href=\"https:\/\/justwomenssports.com\/reads\/boston-marathon-results-us-women-jess-mcclain-course-record-2026\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/justwomenssports.com\/reads\/boston-marathon-results-us-women-jess-mcclain-course-record-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">list<\/a>.
