wind power<\/a> projects on Dec. 22,\u00a0citing a Pentagon complaint that the wind turbine blades would cause radar interference and create a national security risk.\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\nPresident Trump has long railed against wind power, calling the turbines ugly and inefficient, a criticism\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0been echoed for offshore projects by Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who is now running for governor with Trump\u2019s\u00a0endorsement.\u00a0The move to suspend the wind projects was\u00a0slammed by state and local officials, trade\u00a0groups\u00a0and organized labor, and the\u00a0court injunctions to allow them to continue have been applauded.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said\u00a0the court decision allowing Sunrise Wind to\u00a0immediately\u00a0resume construction is a win for New York\u2019s working families and the economy.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\u201cAs energy costs continue to soar, the Trump administration\u2019s ridiculous attempts to halt this project would have killed good-paying jobs and raised energy costs on New Yorkers \u2014 all to score political points and benefit powerful special interests,\u201d Gillibrand said in a written statement. \u201cI will continue pushing back on the Trump administration\u2019s brazen political attacks on New York that are raising costs and hurting families. New Yorkers should not be forced to pay more because of reckless and politically motivated interference by the Trump administration.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
Sunrise Wind is\u00a0nearly 45 percent\u00a0complete, and at the time of the lease suspension order, the project was expected to begin generating power as soon as October.\u00a0The project\u00a0is expected to provide enough energy to power about 600,000 homes.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
In its\u00a0court\u00a0argument, Sunrise Wind\u00a0claimed\u00a0that the stop-work order was costing the project at least $1.25 million per day,\u00a0and if the suspension lasted much\u00a0longer,\u00a0it could force cancellation of the project.\n<\/p>\n
\u201cSunrise Wind is going to deliver much-needed generation for Long\u00a0Island and\u00a0has created thousands of good-paying union jobs,\u201d Ryan Stanton, executive director of the Long Island Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, said in a written statement. \u201cBuilding our critical energy infrastructure strengthens Long Island\u2019s energy security.\u00a0 These are all things that need to stop being politicized. Today\u2019s decision is not just a victory for workers and Long Island as a region but is a clear victory for common sense.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
Empire Wind, a\u00a0$5 billion\u00a0wind power project off Long Island being developed by Equinor, won its court injunction\u00a0on Jan. 15.
