Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office after police opened an investigation linked to his dealings with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Thames Valley Police said officers detained a man in his sixties from Norfolk on Thursday morning and carried out searches at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk. The force did not name the suspect, in line with national guidance. Multiple British media outlets, including the BBC<\/a> and The Guardian<\/a>, identified the man as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.<\/p>\n

Police confirmed the man \u201cremains in police custody at this time\u201d. Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said: \u201cFollowing a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office. It is important that we protect the integrity and objectivity of our investigation as we work with our partners to investigate this alleged offence.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cWe understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Photographs published on Thursday showed unmarked police vehicles and plainclothes officers at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk shortly after 8am. The BBC reported that searches were also under way at Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park, where Mountbatten-Windsor lived until recently. Norfolk Constabulary said it was \u201csupporting a Thames Valley Police investigation into misconduct in a public office\u201d.<\/p>\n

The arrest took place on Mountbatten-Windsor\u2019s 66th birthday. He moved earlier this month to Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate.<\/p>\n

The investigation follows the partial release of files in the United States connected to Epstein<\/a>. According to The Guardian, emails published by the US Department of Justice appeared to show Mountbatten-Windsor forwarding reports of official visits to Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore in 2010, during his time as a UK trade envoy. One email dated November 2010 appeared to be forwarded five minutes after he received it from an adviser. Another, sent on Christmas Eve 2010, appeared to contain a confidential brief on investment opportunities linked to reconstruction work in Afghanistan\u2019s Helmand province.<\/p>\n

Under police procedure, a suspect can be held for up to 24 hours before charge. That period can be extended, with authorisation, to a maximum of 96 hours.\u00a0Policing commentator Danny Shaw told BBC Radio 5 Live that in most cases suspects are held for 12 to 24 hours before police decide whether to charge or release them under investigation.<\/p>\n

Mountbatten-Windsor has denied wrongdoing in relation to Epstein in the past. He has not responded to recent requests for comment from several media organisations regarding the latest allegations linked to the files.<\/p>\n

Buckingham Palace said last year that the King had stripped his younger brother of his royal titles and dukedom amid concern over reputational damage to the monarchy arising from his association with Epstein. He no longer undertakes official royal duties but remains eighth in line to the throne.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued after news of the arrest broke, King Charles said: \u201cI have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office. What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities. In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation. Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.\u201d<\/p>\n

The King added that it would not be right for him to comment further while the process continues and said he and his family would continue their public duties. The BBC reported that neither the King nor Buckingham Palace received advance notice of the arrest.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Keir Starmer told BBC Breakfast earlier in the day that \u201cnobody is above the law\u201d and said anyone with relevant information should come forward.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Mountbatten-Windsor stepped back from public life in 2019 following a televised interview about his friendship with Epstein. Epstein died in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.<\/p>\n
