(WFSB) &#8211; A driver fled the scene after crashing into a utility pole and sparking a brush fire Thursday night on Elton Road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Berlin Volunteer Fire Department responded to the accident at 11:40 p.m. between Old Farms Place and Mallard Lane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The driver left the roadway and struck a utility pole, causing the vehicle to roll over before coming to a stop against a tree. The utility pole was heavily damaged, causing downed wires and a subsequent fire in the brush along the roadway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Firefighters conducted a brief search for the operator, who had fled the scene. Berlin police found the driver a short distance away with assistance from one of their K9 units.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Power has been disconnected and the fire has been extinguished.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The roadway will remain closed to through traffic for an extended period while utility crews work to repair the pole and restore power. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Motorists are advised to avoid the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2026 WFSB.
