The vote in Nuuk was 16 in favour, none against and seven abstentions. The US State Department welcomed the approval on 4 November, with spokesperson Tommy Pigott calling it a “massive win” for NATO and US national security.

Military provisions and political terms

US President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen signed the pact on 22 September 2026, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. It provides for a stronger US military presence, modernisation of Pituffik Space Base and additional defence areas at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig. It also advances plans for Trump’s proposed Golden Dome Missile Defense System. The agreement reaffirms Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination. It would remain applicable if Greenland became independent, with Greenland required to remain in NATO. The pact is intended to ease tensions following Trump’s repeated calls for Greenland to become part of the United States.

Next steps and concerns

Danish lawmakers are scheduled to hold a first reading on 11 November and a final vote on 19 November 2026. The pact will enter into force only after Denmark completes its parliamentary process. Some Greenlandic residents and opposition lawmakers have questioned its economic benefits and the potential influence of the US government; Nalarak party leader Pelle Broberg has voiced such concerns.

Important Facts for Exams

Base jurisdiction: Pituffik Space Base’s 1951 defence arrangement gives the United States exclusive jurisdiction over its facilities; Denmark and Greenland have flag and liaison provisions.
Missile warning: Pituffik Space Base hosts a ballistic-missile early-warning system designed to detect and track intercontinental missiles launched against North America.
Boost-phase interception: The proposed Golden Dome would target missiles during boost phase using low-orbit interceptors; its concept calls for thousands of satellites to maintain coverage.

Category: International / World Current Affairs

Home Greenland Approves Security Pact with Denmark and US Greenland’s parliament, Inatsisartut,…

[5
57
post-198868","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-greenland","tag-greenland
["GET
