{"id":20664,"date":"2026-02-22T06:52:49","date_gmt":"2026-02-22T06:52:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/20664\/"},"modified":"2026-02-22T06:52:49","modified_gmt":"2026-02-22T06:52:49","slug":"quarter-final-dates-times-and-venues-confirmed-as-st-pats-maghera-continue-title-defence-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/20664\/","title":{"rendered":"Quarter-final dates, times and venues confirmed as St Pat\u2019s, Maghera continue title defence \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Ulster Schools\u2019 GAA council in conjunction with their sponsors Danske Bank have released details of the times and venues for the quarter-finals in the MacRory Cup competition. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The four games will take place on consecutive evenings from January 7 to 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">All four group winners have qualified for the quarter-finals and they had \u2018home\u2019 venues in those ties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">First up on Wednesday, January 7 is the meeting in Healy Park of Omagh CBS and St Patrick\u2019s, Armagh. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/gaa\/gaelic-football\/dublin-v-kerry-live-updates-from-croke-park-as-the-boys-in-blue-take-on-the-kingdom-ZGQ7EQUZJBDRPKQM5SSAAUQO3E\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Dublin 1-10 Kerry 1-16: Mark O&#x2019;Shea stars and Tony Brosnan nets in otherwise dull Kerry victory\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/6MUVYMYI5JCU5OCIYZD3EUIDSA.webp.jpeg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/gaa\/gaelic-football\/it-was-so-fun-for-a-while-tyrone-niall-morgan-on-return-to-traditional-goalkeeping-midfield-piggery-and-meeting-familiar-faces-MICU7DX37RHJXDMKHV4UMIQG7E\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"&#x2018;It was so fun for a while...&#x2019;: Tyrone&#x2019;s Niall Morgan on return to &#x2018;traditional&#x2019; goalkeeping, midfield &#x2018;piggery&#x2019; and meeting familiar faces \" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/TOMC4P4Z45AUJDSZUTOJVNR7FA.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The pair actually met in a first round group game away back on October 23, also in Healy Park under lights, when Armagh scored a shock 4-12 to 2-12 win over the home side.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Omagh, however, impressed in the rest of their group games and actually topped the standings on the head-to-head rule over Abbey CBS who inflicted a heavy defeat on Armagh in their final group game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">St Patrick\u2019s, however, recovered to edge home against the other Newry seat of learning St Colman\u2019s in the quarter-finals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Abbey CBS are in action in the second game. They have to travel to Owenbeg on Thursday, January 8 to play the holders St Patrick\u2019s, Maghera in what many see as the game of the round.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Diarmaid O'Rourke on the attack for the Abbey CBS against St Paul's H.S Bessbrook in the MacRory Cup.\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/E2PF2REI3ZFY5JZMB7KMZ4XSIY.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"502\"\/>Diarmaid O&#8217;Rourke on the attack for the Abbey CBS against St Paul&#8217;s, Bessbrook in the MacRory Cup<br \/>\nPICTURE: Noel Moan <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Abbey have been returning high tallies in their more recent games, although they did well to hold off St Patrick\u2019s, Cavan in the last 16, the Breffnimen coming back from a deficit of 12 points at the break to almost snatch the win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Cavan were in Maghera\u2019s group and the Derry boys went on to beat St Paul\u2019s, Bessbrook in the last 16. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Since then, their Dungiven contingent have had Ulster club action in both codes and will see more before the Abbey tie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The winners of the first two MacRory ties will meet in the semi-final. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It could well return a Maghera v Armagh semi-final, a repeat of last January, although the last two Hogan Cup winners are more likely to be going two-to-toe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Friday\u2019s action is in Convoy with an earlier throw-in time of 4.15pm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Last year\u2019s beaten finalists, Abbey Vocational are up against St Mary\u2019s, Magherafelt, who are coming into the game a little under the radar although their only defeat to date has been against St Patrick\u2019s Academy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Four Masters were beaten by Dungiven last weekend in the Ulster Minor Football tournament and the school also lost the Danske Bank Rafferty Cup final on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Michael Higgins of St Mary's Grammar, Magherafelt, in action against Ultan Quinn of St Joseph's Grammar, Donaghmore, during the Macrory cup match at Brocagh, Co Tyrone\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/S37ZCMGTYNBEBI2YRQF3NPURPQ.JPG\"  width=\"800\" height=\"563\"\/>Michael Higgins of St Mary&#8217;s Grammar, Magherafelt, in action against Ultan Quinn of St Joseph&#8217;s Grammar, Donaghmore, during the Macrory Cup match at Brocagh. Magherafelt will face Donegal side Abbey VS in the quarter-finals<br \/>\nPICTURE: Oliver McVeigh (\u00a9Oliver McVeigh) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Abbey Vocational will be keen to arrest that run of results and get back to winning ways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Friday\u2019s winners will go into a semi-final against either St Patrick\u2019s Academy or Our Lady\u2019s, Castleblayney who face each other on Saturday January 10 at 7pm in Stewartstown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Academy have done little to suggest that their elevation to front-runners in the MacRory on the back of a Rannafast title two years ago has them over-rated. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Four wins and a draw in the MacRory Cup to date were all impressive outings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Castleblayney\u2019s only loss was by three points to Abbey Vocational, while they also drew with St Michael\u2019s Enniskillen. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Their last 16 outing against Donaghmore was perhaps their best performance to date.
