{"id":21465,"date":"2026-02-23T04:39:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T04:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/21465\/"},"modified":"2026-02-23T04:39:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T04:39:08","slug":"denmark-rebuffs-trumps-claim-greenland-needs-us-hospital-boat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/21465\/","title":{"rendered":"Denmark rebuffs Trump\u2019s claim Greenland needs US hospital boat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>dpa<\/p>\n<p>Washington<\/p>\n<p>The United States plans to send a naval hospital ship to Greenland, President Donald Trump has said, signalling a move that could heighten existing tensions with NATO ally Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>The vessel would \u201ctake care of the many people who are sick, and not being taken care of there,\u201d Trump wrote on Saturday evening on his Truth Social mouthpiece.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s on the way!!!\u201d he added, calling it a \u201cgreat\u201d hospital boat and illustrating his post with a picture\u00a0of a ship bearing the name of one of two US hospital ships: USNS Mercy. He provided no further details.<\/p>\n<p>Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded on Sunday to Trump\u2019s latest statement with a dig at the US, without directly mentioning the president or his country.<\/p>\n<p>Posting\u00a0on Instagram, Frederiksen said she was glad to \u201clive in a country where all people have free and equal access to healthcare\u201d and where \u201cinsurance and wealth do not determine whether you receive adequate treatment.\u201d\u00a0Greenland takes the same approach, she added.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s repeated threats in recent weeks to potentially annex Greenland, a Danish territory of strategic importance, have strained relations between Europe and the United States. European countries including Germany, Britain and France support\u00a0Denmark and Greenland in\u00a0rejecting a\u00a0US takeover of the Arctic territory.<\/p>\n<p>Talks between Copenhagen, Nuuk and the Trump administration are ongoing to seek a compromise.<\/p>\n<p>The US Navy operates two large hospital ships, each with about 1,000 beds, including 80 intensive care units.<\/p>\n<p>These vessels have previously been deployed after natural disasters such as earthquakes or hurricanes, and temporarily served US ports during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Both are currently believed to be undergoing repairs in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Greenland, with a population of around 57,000, has not recently reported a significant medical need that would require the deployment of a hospital ship.<\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s defence minister, Troels Lund Poulsen, told Danish broadcaster DR on Sunday that Denmark had not been informed of Trump\u2019s plans for the hospital ship.
