dive, a closer look at the island that has risen to new popularity this year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Globe\u2019s and Mail\u2019s Europe Correspondent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-greenland-warming-temperatures-hunters-fishers-tour-operators-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-greenland-warming-temperatures-hunters-fishers-tour-operators-trump\/\">Paul Waldie has spent some time in Greenland<\/a> alongside photographer Siegfried Modola. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">During a trip earlier this month, they saw that instead of bundling up from head to toe to ward off frigid temperatures typical of this time of year, people in Nuuk were enjoying brilliant sunshine and shedding their hats and gloves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">According to preliminary figures from the Danish Meteorological Institute, Nuuk just experienced its warmest January on record. <\/p>\n<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/NQPHAT2BGFHL3CJB3GNM6TC4FA.JPG?auth=9389dcdb5781ace8b8526f6225bceaec612a85595a35e810fa893f74e0559244&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" Greenland,\u201d Jacob Hoyer, the head of Denmark\u2019s National Centre for Climate Research, told Reuters. \u201cFrom the records we can see that it is warming four times faster than the mean temperature hike in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">And although all the new attention has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-trump-greenland-tourist-destination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-trump-greenland-tourist-destination\/\">brought a wave of tourism to the island<\/a>, it has also brought new challenges. It is a place of raw beauty and hard logistics. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">On the ground, Paul spoke to locals and heard that the warmer weather has already had an impact in Nuuk and across the island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The unusual weather has forced some fishers to change how they catch cod, halibut and red fish. The bare ground has also meant some tour operators had to start cancelling snowmobile excursions. Denmark asserts its legal sovereignty over the island. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">But nearly 90 per cent of Greenland\u2019s 57,000 population are Inuit. And for the Inuit people, who have lived there for centuries, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-greenland-inuit-us-trump-denmark-ownership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-greenland-inuit-us-trump-denmark-ownership\/\">no one truly owns the Arctic land<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/ONWIVBY26ZHNBFGE6IUYCVBMFA.JPG?auth=de018c2885ab21680802820e6efadc4e47d3114a32710bea1b46da41e9a5c515&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">An aerial view shows the fjords near the capital, Nuuk, Greenland, on February 8.Siegfried Modola\/The Globe and Mail<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The concept that ownership is shared collectively is central to the Inuit identity, they say. It has survived 300 years of colonization and is written into law: People can own houses, but not the land beneath them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Rakel Kristiansen, from a family of shamanic practitioners, said Inuit people saw themselves as temporary guardians of the land. \u201cIn our understanding, owning land is the wrong question,\u201d she said. \u201cThe question should be who is responsible for the land. But those bunches of broccoli and pints of strawberries hide the tenuous reality of our food system.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sarah Elton and Aden Fisher, University of Toronto\u2019s Dalla Lana School of Public HealthBusiness and investing<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Ontario Teachers\u2019 Pension Plan reboots climate goals with $70-billion target<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Ontario Teachers\u2019 Pension Plan is aiming to double its portfolio of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-ontario-teachers-pension-plan-climate-investing-emissions-target\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-ontario-teachers-pension-plan-climate-investing-emissions-target\/\">assets that are \u201caligned\u201d with a net-zero transition<\/a> by 2030, but dropping an emissions target that it set five years ago. The $270-billion pension plan announced a new goal to reach $70-billion of investments in climate-friendly assets over the next four years, up from $35-billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The new framework would count investments in privately owned companies that contribute directly to climate solutions, as well as large emitters that have credible plans to decarbonize.
