The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani Today, Tajani is in Brussels to attend the meeting of the European Union Foreign Affairs Council. Tajani will also chair a new meeting of the “Tariff Task Force” with 40 Italian companies and approximately 80 trade associations, to discuss the U.S. Administration’s decision to temporarily revise tariffs. Also on the agenda at the CAE is a session on the situation in the Middle East, following the first formal meeting of the “Board of Peace” for Gaza, chaired by the U.S. President. Donald Trump, in which Tajani participated for Italy as an observer.<\/p>\n
At the heart of the discussions will be Europe’s contribution to the launch of “phase two” of the American peace plan, which includes the demilitarization and reconstruction of the Strip, and the deployment of the Stabilization Force (ISF) to strengthen aid and facilitate the IDF’s withdrawal. The ministers will also exchange views with the High Representative for Gaza. Nikolay MladenovThe 27 will finally address the situation in Iran and the development of negotiations on the nuclear program.<\/p>\n
The government’s goal regarding the US tariffs is to “reassure all Italian exporting companies,” Tajani said upon his arrival in Brussels. “That’s why, after the G7 Trade meeting, I will convene the Tariffs Task Force with dozens of related companies, to whom we will provide all the information. Right now, it’s necessary to reassure the business community,” Tajani added, adding that “trade wars serve no one.” The Foreign Ministry minister also spoke of the excellent work done by the European Commissioner for Trade. Maros Sefcovic in the previous negotiations with the US on tariffs, stating that “he is a credible and respected interlocutor also in the United States”.<\/p>\n
Italy disagrees with Hungary’s veto of the \u20ac90 billion loan for Ukraine and the 20th package of sanctions against Russia, Tajani explained. “Where unanimity is required, we cannot do otherwise (…) but we support the new sanctions and the \u20ac90 billion financing,” that is, “the ultra-majoritarian line in the European Union,” he explained. “We will continue to support Ukraine. Those who refuse to make decisions that will pressure Moscow and bring them to a more moderate resolution are mistaken,” Tajani continued.<\/p>\n
The “Italian model” in relation to migration is “accepted, followed, and appreciated by other countries as well,” the minister said. “Italy’s role is to do what we have always done. European decisions have proven us right. We are moving forward,” the minister said. “We also discussed this in Munich at a meeting on migration organized with the United Kingdom. The Italian model is now accepted, followed, and appreciated by other countries as well,” Tajani stated.<\/p>\n
Italy is against “any type of annexation of West Bank territories to Israel,” the minister said. “We have always condemned this decision. A few days ago, Italy signed a statement at the UN against any attempt to occupy parts of the West Bank,” he recalled. “I have also stated this several times in Parliament. Our position is against it; we support sanctions on the settlers,” Tajani continued.<\/p>\n
