From May 1, 2026, all advertisements for meat, flights, petrol and diesel vehicles, and gas heating contracts will be banned in public spaces across Amsterdam, including on trams, trains, buses, and bus stop shelters, and within train and metro stations.<\/p>\n
Corporate advertisements for high-carbon<\/a> companies (for example, a car producer rather than a car) can continue for now, but will be prohibited from April 2028.<\/p>\n Amsterdam City Council approved the proposal, which came from Partij voor de Dieren (Party for the Animals) and GroenLinks (effectively \u201cGreenLeft\u201d). The decision was welcomed by advocacy groups and nonprofits such as ProVeg.<\/p>\n The proposal was approved despite last-minute lobbying from JCDecaux, the largest outdoor advertising operator in the world with more than 1 million advertising panels in more than 80 countries. The city currently has a contract with the JCDecaux, and corporate advertising will continue until it expires.<\/p>\n \u2018Fossil fuels and meat are rooted in the advertising industry\u2019<\/p>\n As reported by DeSmog<\/a>, JCDecaux sent an email to all parties represented on the Amsterdam City Council to warn that the ban would have \u201cfar-reaching financial and legal consequences.\u201d The company, which maintains 1,500 bus shelters and other public amenities across the city, warned that services may suffer without ad revenue.<\/p>\n Anke Bakker<\/a>, Party for the Animals councillor and co-sponsor of the ban, said, \u201cI am confident that they will be able to continue filling the advertising space, but with vegetarian and emission-free products.\u201d<\/p>\n She also noted that the last-minute email from JCDecaux illustrated \u201chow deeply fossil fuels and meat are rooted in the advertising industry.\u201d Bakker added that there was \u201cwidespread support in society\u201d for pro-climate ad bans.<\/p>\n Joey Cramer, the director of ProVeg said<\/a>, \u201cWe know that most of the carbon emissions in the food system comes from meat production so it makes sense for Amsterdam to restrict the advertising of meat as part of its strategy to promote food system change. This policy supports Amsterdam\u2019s existing goal of ensuring their citizens\u2019 diets are 50% plant-based by 2050. Such a shift is not only good for the climate, it\u2019s good for people\u2019s health and, of course, for animal.\u201d<\/p>\n Read more: Cutting-Edge Plant-Based Plastic Bag Dissolves In Seawater Leaving No Microplastics<\/a><\/p>\n The problem of outdoor advertising<\/p>\n In addition to normalizing harmful industries<\/a>, campaigners have noted that outdoor advertising can also deepen inequality, distract drivers, harm wildlife, harm mental health, drain resources, erode local culture, and effectively privatize public space.<\/p>\n In the Netherlands, Utrecht, Delft, and The Hague have prohibited fossil fuel advertisements in public settings such as bus shelters. Meanwhile, Zwolle and Nijmegen<\/a> are also taking steps to limit ads for environmentally destructive products.<\/p>\n Both Utrecht and Zwolle have also moved to ban ads for meat as well as those for fossil fuels.
