It remains under constant Russian fire.

Personal testimonies seek to form connections with German visitors, such as a quote from Roman Schwarzman, a Holocaust survivor: “Hitler wanted to kill me because I am Jewish; Putin wants to kill me because I am Ukrainian.”

On the exhibition’s information panels, the war in Ukraine is fitted into a narrative constructed around the idea of “Russian imperialism”.

It is linked to the Soviet Union’s invasion of eastern Poland in 1939, the crushing of the Prague Spring, and even Russia’s 2015 military intervention in Syria to support Bashar al-Assad, the country’s longtime ruler who was deposed in late 2024.

The private Berlin museum had already made a name for itself on the first anniversary of the Ukraine war by displaying, in front of the Russian embassy in Berlin, the wreck of a destroyed tank that had been towed from the outskirts of Kyiv.

Attending an event Monday a day ahead of the new exhibition’s public opening, Hanna Maliar, a former Ukrainian deputy defence minister, welcomed Germany’s “military, political, and also cultural support”.

Such backing was key, she stressed, as “Ukraine is the shield of Europe”.

lep/sr/ach

A permanent exhibition about the Ukraine war opens at a former Nazi bunker in Berlin on the fourth…

[99
688,15833,112,1697,1157,1653,1715,190,1583,15831,15832,1158,238,4301,15834,15829,15830,15835,4302,15810,241,546
0":"post-23946","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-berlin","8":"tag-afp","9":"tag-anti-ukrainian-sentiment","10":"tag-berlin","11":"tag-conflicts","12":"tag-diplomacy","13":"tag-foreign-relations-of-russia","14":"tag-foreign-relations-of-ukraine","15":"tag-germany","16":"tag-international-relations","17":"tag-invasions-of-ukraine","18":"tag-kherson","19":"tag-politics","20":"tag-russia","21":"tag-russia-ukraine-military-relations","22":"tag-russia-ukraine-relations","23":"tag-russian-invasion-of-ukraine","24":"tag-russian-irredentism","25":"tag-russian-ukrainian-wars","26":"tag-russo-ukrainian-war","27":"tag-russo-ukrainian-war-2022-present","28":"tag-ukraine","29":"tag-war
["GET
