Dozens of FBI witness interview records appear to be missing from the US Department of Justice\u2019s public release of Jeffrey Epstein files, according to investigations by NPR<\/a> and CNN<\/a>. The absent material includes interviews linked to a woman who accused President Donald Trump of sexual abuse when she was a minor.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Justice Department published more than three million pages of documents related to Epstein, the financier who died in federal custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. The release followed passage of the Epstein Files Transparency Act and congressional pressure for disclosure.<\/p>\n

CNN reported that an evidence log provided to lawyers for Ghislaine Maxwell lists around 325 FBI witness interview records. More than 90 of those entries do not appear on the Department of Justice website<\/a>, according to CNN\u2019s review of serial numbers and document logs.<\/p>\n

NPR conducted a separate examination of FBI case files, discovery logs and document metadata. It found that dozens of pages, including what appear to be more than 50 pages of interview reports and notes, are catalogued in internal records but not accessible in the public database.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Among the missing items are interviews connected to a woman who told the FBI in July 2019 that Epstein abused her from the age of about 13. In internal FBI material cited by NPR, she alleged that around 1983 Epstein introduced her to Trump and that Trump forced her to perform oral sex before striking her. Trump has denied wrongdoing in connection with Epstein.<\/p>\n

Only one of four FBI interviews with that accuser, dated 24 July 2019, appears in the public database. That report does not mention Trump. Discovery logs in the Maxwell case indicate that additional interviews took place in August and October 2019. According to NPR, 53 pages of related interview material and notes appear to be missing.<\/p>\n

A White House spokeswoman told NPR that Trump \u201chas done more for Epstein\u2019s victims than anyone before him\u201d and that he has been \u201ctotally exonerated on anything relating to Epstein\u201d. The Justice Department has stated that any documents not published are duplicates, privileged material or part of ongoing investigations. After NPR published its findings, a department spokeswoman reiterated that no records were withheld on the basis of embarrassment or political sensitivity.<\/p>\n

Representative Robert Garcia, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said he reviewed unredacted evidence logs at the department. \u201cOversight Democrats can confirm that the DOJ appears to have illegally withheld FBI interviews with this survivor who accused President Trump of heinous crimes,\u201d he said in a statement. Democrats on the committee have opened a parallel inquiry into the handling of the files.<\/p>\n

Some documents have been removed and later restored to the department\u2019s website in recent weeks. NPR reported that one interview referring to a second accuser who said Epstein took her to meet Trump at Mar-a-Lago was taken down after initial publication and reposted in February. Other related files remain offline, including an interview with the woman\u2019s mother. The department said temporary removals relate to additional redactions requested by victims or their lawyers.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Justice Department has acknowledged that the volume of material creates a risk of errors in redaction. In a statement to NPR, it said it is working \u201caround the clock\u201d to address concerns and protect personal information.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting a minor for prostitution and served a prison sentence. He was arrested again in July 2019 on federal charges of sex trafficking minors and died in jail later that month. Maxwell was convicted in 2021 of sex trafficking and is serving a 20-year sentence.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Victims and their lawyers have criticised the Justice Department\u2019s handling of the release. One survivor wrote to a federal judge that failure to publish full interview records, with names redacted, perpetuates secrecy. Lawyers for another accuser described the process as flawed and said the department had a duty to protect anonymity while ensuring transparency.<\/p>\n
