It has been closed more than ten times since early October<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/russia-fighter-jets-nato-airspace-ukraine-war-b2855852.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:due to similar incidents;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"> due to similar incidents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Thousands were stranded earlier this week when the airport was forced to shut after sightings of several balloons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Lithuanian aviation authorities reported the balloons appeared to be sent at regular time intervals and were directed at the runways.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Vilnius airport has been forced to shut again after the sightings (AFP via Getty Images)\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"606\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bc22420ad6bfed47b76d04a71461c488.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Vilnius airport has been forced to shut again after the sightings (AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Lithuania believes the incidents are part of a calculated campaign by cigarette smugglers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/lithuania-vilnius-belarus-alexander-lukashenko-europe-b2876493.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:and an orchestrated \u201chybrid attack\u201d by Belarus;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">and an orchestrated \u201chybrid attack\u201d by Belarus<\/a>, a staunch ally of Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In previous incidents at least 60 balloons were seen floating into Lithuanian airspace, 40 of them reaching areas critical for aviation safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis is a cynical hybrid attack against our economy, aviation security, and the entire nation,\u201d Taurimas Valys, Lithuania\u2019s deputy minister of foreign affairs, said of the incident at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Belarusian president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/alexander-lukashenko\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Alexander Lukashenko;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Alexander Lukashenko<\/a>, a close ally of Russia\u2019s Vladimir Putin, has previously said that Belarus would apologise if its involvement was established.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Tensions have continued to escalate after Lithuania closed its borders with Belarus following the repeated disruptions at its airport in October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Minsk prevented over 1,000 Lithuanian cargo trucks from exiting Belarus in retaliation. The Lithuanian government reopened the border less than three weeks after its closure following pressure from national logistics companies.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Lithuanian prime minister Inga Ruginien\u0117 said the border will be closed if necessary (AP)\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"641\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/975f79e4d194be8381fae7d14f653eca.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Lithuanian prime minister Inga Ruginien\u0117 said the border will be closed if necessary (AP)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But Lithuanian authorities have noted that the number of balloons flying in has continued to rise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIf necessary, we will close the border, but please understand that we must coordinate every action with our strategic partners,\u201d Lithuanian prime minister Inga Ruginien\u0117 said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe are considering the possibility of moving night flights to other airports like Kaunas,\u201d added Ignas Algirdas Dobrovolskas, an adviser to the prime minister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe are now focusing on how to actually help people and businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Several countries, including Poland, Estonia and Romania, have reported violations of their airspace in recent weeks after accusing Russia of \u201chybrid warfare\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Russia has vehemently denied the claims.
