Amid tensions between the US and Russia and Greenland-US , Denmark\u2019s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Thursday that she had scheduled this year\u2019s general election for March 24.<\/p>\n

\u201cDear Danes, today I have asked His Majesty the King to call an election for the Folketing,” Denmark\u2019s parliament, Frederiksen told the house.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether I will continue to be your prime minister depends on how strong a mandate you give the Social Democrats in the parliamentary election to be held on March 24, 2026,” she added.<\/p>\n

According to AFP, Frederiksen had to call an election, as per the Danish law, within four years of the last, which was held on November 1, 2022.<\/p>\n

This comes as Denmark\u2019s relations with the US continue to be strained over President Donald Trump\u2019s desire to acquire Greenland.<\/p>\n

According to AFP, Denmark and Greenland are currently holding talks with the United States about the future of Greenland, an autonomous Arctic territory which Trump has argued is crucial for US \u201cnational security”.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though there is now an election campaign in Denmark, the world out there is not waiting for us. Its unrest continues unabated and, as everyone knows, for example the dispute over Greenland is not over yet,” Frederiksen said.<\/p>\n

While addressing the parliament, Frederiksen tabled the outlines of her election platform, which included a reform of the retirement age and the introduction of a wealth tax, AFP reported.<\/p>\n

While emphasizing that Denmark must continue to rearm and help protect Europe from Russia, she said: \u201cSecurity policy is and will remain the very foundation of Danish politics for many, many years to come.”<\/p>\n

The Nordic country would also need to face \u201cthreats from the west and the risk of terror from the south”, Frederiksen said. \u201cWe must stand united in Europe.”<\/p>\n

She pointed out that Denmark will need to \u201cstand on our own feet” in the next four years and relations with Washington will also need to be redefined.<\/p>\n
