WASHINGTON (TNND) \u2014 Iceland is expected to start discussions about potentially joining the European Union<\/a>, potentially as early as this summer, according to reports.<\/p>\n

This news comes as Brussels works on a plan to maybe give Ukraine partial membership in the European Union.<\/a><\/p>\n

Two sources familiar with the situation say Reykjavik\u2019s coalition will have a referendum on potentially joining the EU by 2027, according to the Politico news outlet.<\/a><\/p>\n

The parliament in Iceland will announce the date in the coming weeks, the sources say.<\/p>\n

Multiple politicians in the EU have been making trips to Iceland and if the country votes yes, they could become part of the EU before any other country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe conversation on enlargement is shifting,\u201d EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos, who met with Iceland\u2019s Foreign Minister \u00deorger\u00f0ur Katr\u00edn Gunnarsd\u00f3ttir said in a statement to Politico last month.<\/p>\n

She said this matter concerns all Europeans.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is increasingly about security, about belonging and about preserving our ability to act in a world of competing spheres of influence,\u201d her statement continued. \u201cThis concerns all Europeans.\u201d<\/p>\n
