{"id":26571,"date":"2026-02-27T15:32:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T15:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/26571\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T15:32:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T15:32:09","slug":"us-religious-freedom-commission-urges-state-department-to-place-turkey-on-watch-list-over-treatment-of-christians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/26571\/","title":{"rendered":"US religious freedom commission urges State Department to place Turkey on watch list over treatment of Christians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            <a href=\"https:\/\/stockholmcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/religious-freedom.png\" data-caption=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"450\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- alt=\"\" title=\"religious freedom\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/religious-freedom-696x450.png\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"450\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/religious-freedom-696x450.png\"   alt=\"\" title=\"religious freedom\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) on Thursday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscirf.gov\/news-room\/releases-statements\/state-department-should-place-turkey-special-watch-list\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">urged<\/a> the State Department to put Turkey on its special watch list, citing continued targeting of foreign-born Protestants and broader ongoing restrictions on religious freedoms in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The USCIRF said in a statement that Turkish authorities continue to label foreign-born Protestants as national security threats, a designation that has resulted in entry bans, residency denials and deportations, creating what it described as a climate of fear within the country\u2019s small Protestant community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone, regardless of residency status, has the right to freedom of religion or belief under international law,\u201d said USCIRF Chair <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscirf.gov\/about-uscirf\/commissioners\/vicky-hartzler\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vicky Hartzler<\/a>. \u201cThe US administration should maintain the momentum President Trump made in his September meeting with President Erdo\u011fan and push for tangible improvements to Turkey\u2019s religious freedom record, including an end to its repressive tactics against Christians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The commission also welcomed a European Parliament <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/tr\/apden-t%C3%BCrkiyeye-n-82-ve-g-87-kullan%C4%B1m%C4%B1n%C4%B1-durdurun\/a-75936711\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resolution<\/a> calling for the removal of security codes that bar foreign journalists and Christian missionaries from entering Turkey, as well as the European Court of Human Rights\u2019 (ECtHR) <a href=\"https:\/\/hudoc.echr.coe.int\/#{%22tabview%22:[%22document%22],%22itemid%22:[%22001-248520%22]}\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">decision<\/a> to review applications by affected individuals.<\/p>\n<p>The USCIRF urged the US government to press Turkey to lift restrictions affecting access to houses of worship, remove obstacles facing foreign-born clergy and allow religious institutions to operate freely, including the long-closed Halki Theological Seminary in \u0130stanbul.<\/p>\n<p>The commission also pointed to Turkey\u2019s broader record on religious freedom, citing obstacles to the registration of Alevi, Protestant and Jehovah\u2019s Witness places of worship and the government\u2019s continued refusal to grant legal personality and full institutional autonomy to religious communities.<\/p>\n<p>In its 2025 annual report, the USCIRF\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stockholmcf.org\/us-religious-freedom-commission-recommends-turkey-for-special-watch-list-over-severe-violations\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recommended<\/a>\u00a0putting Turkey on the State Department\u2019s Special Watch List for engaging in or tolerating severe violations of religious freedom.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 12 countries were recommended for placement on the State Department\u2019s Special Watch List based on their governments\u2019 perpetration or toleration of serious violations: Algeria, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Turkey and Uzbekistan.<\/p>\n<p>The USCIRF is an independent, bipartisan federal government entity established by the US Congress to monitor, analyze and report on threats to religious freedom abroad.
