{"id":26783,"date":"2026-02-27T18:35:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T18:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/26783\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T18:35:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T18:35:12","slug":"brussels-orders-probe-of-mandelsons-epstein-ties-while-eu-trade-rep-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/26783\/","title":{"rendered":"Brussels orders probe of Mandelson&#8217;s Epstein ties while EU trade rep"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">BRUSSELS \u2013 The European Union has ordered its anti-fraud office to investigate Peter Mandelson, the disgraced former British ambassador to the United States, over his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein while serving as Brussels&#8217; trade representative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cGiven the circumstances, and the significant amount of documents made available publicly, the European Commission also asked OLAF on 18 February to look into the matter,\u201d a commission spokesperson who was not authorized to be publicly named said late Thursday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The European Anti-Fraud Office, known by its French acronym OLAF, is the EU&#8217;s watchdog agency that has tackled <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/middle-east-greece-turkey-migration-8b4f22cab5fd705137985173069537bc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">migration authorities<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-europe-immigration-copenhagen-european-union-6bbd41e870c1c1d940afc2e9b2372adb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lawmakers<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/science-business-france-elections-europe-496979cf9721d9482d97430ae8567bc0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">financial fraud<\/a> and rights violations, among other violations. Its office did not confirm the investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">An influential British figure, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/epstein-mandelson-starmer-britain-5db6dcb0810be1e8a7b49c58a73712f3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mandelson is under investigation<\/a> for alleged misconduct in public office linked to his relationship with Epstein.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Mandelson\u2019s ties to Epstein have threatened the leadership of Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/keir-starmer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Keir Starmer<\/a>, who appointed the veteran statesman to the diplomatic post despite warnings about his friendship with the disgraced financier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Mandelson has been a major player for decades in the center-left Labour Party, known as a skilled political operative dubbed the \u201cPrince of Darkness\u201d for his cunning and ruthlessness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He helped the party return to power in 1997 as \u201cNew Labour\u201d under Prime Minister Tony Blair and served in senior positions until 2001. He served again, under Prime Minister Gordon Brown, from 2008 to 2010. In between those high-level positions in London, he was in Brussels, serving as the EU\u2019s trade commissioner from November 2004 to October 2008 back before Brexit wrenched the U.K out of the bloc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Mixing professional and private<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Mandelson was in contact with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell before, during and after that time in Brussels, according to documents analyzed by the AP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI love disgusting. That\u2019s why I am wild and dangerous, and twice shy\u2026\u201d Mandelson wrote to Maxwell in a 2002 email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cPete I have warned you about that before\u201d said Maxwell in reply. \u201cBehave or you will be punished like the bad boy you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In 2003, he messaged Maxwell about family travel arrangements using the title \u201cMember of Parliament for Hartlepool, House of Commons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Payment records suggest Epstein gave Mandelson or his husband, Reinaldo Avila da Silva, $75,000 in 2003 and 2004. Mandelson said he had no recollection of receiving that money, questioned the authenticity of bank statements and believed the allegations were false.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Just after returning to London from Brussels, on Oct. 7, 2008, Epstein counseled Mandelson on how to frame the 2008 financial crisis as an opportunity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Epstein offered to host Mandelson in a New York apartment in 2009, about five months before the two discussed by email manipulating then-British premier Gordon Brown to step down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Possible privileged information shared<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Mandelson appears to have sent Epstein, whom he referred to as his \u201cbest pal,\u201d sensitive government information that could potentially influence markets when he was a senior minister in the British government in 2009 just after leaving the helm of the EU\u2019s trade negotiations. The EU probe could be focused on Mandelson\u2019s sharing of similar privileged information with Epstein.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Mandelson seems to have tipped Epstein in 2010 about the EU\u2019s colossal half-trillion-euro bailout package to save the euro after the 2008 financial crisis. He wrote to Epstein that \u201csources tell me 500 b euro bailout\u201d and should be \u201cannounced tonight\u201d on May 9, 2010 \u2014 a day before the package was public. That information could be useful for insider trading.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">All European commissioners are bound by ethical obligations and an official code of conduct during and after their time in office. Suspected breaches of those obligations can prompt investigations by OLAF.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/police-arrest-peter-mandelson-epstein-bc1cbabe40687e09d0f145a75f6a77e2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mandelson was released<\/a> from British custody early Tuesday morning after more than nine hours of questioning. He has previously denied wrongdoing and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/britain-epstein-andrew-mandelson-misconduct-1108af2d0c2145db7ab3ba37b8161ee2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hasn\u2019t been charged,<\/a> though the investigation is continuing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Mandelson\u2019s lawyers said Tuesday that he had voluntarily agreed to speak with police next month and that his arrest was the result of a \u201cbaseless suggestion\u201d that he planned to flee the country.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 The Associated Press.
