The facility began operations in 2025, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in January.\n      \t  \t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"TX\">Best known for its containership business, Maersk\u2019s expansion of its U.S. ground operations is part of a wider global initiative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TX\">Maersk ranks No. 7 on the Transport Topics Top 50 list of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/globalfreight\/rankings\/2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">largest global freight companies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/logistics\/companies\/maersk\/2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">No. 29<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/logistics\/rankings\/2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TT Top 100 logistics companies list<\/a>.\n      \t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"TX\">Currently, Maersk operates 65 ground freight facilities in the U.S. The next terminals to open will be smaller than the Fontana site, the spokeswoman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TX\">\u201cWe expand where it helps us create more efficient routing, reduce empty miles, and improve transit time reliability for customers,\u201d the spokeswoman said in an email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TX\">\u201cRather than adding capacity for its own sake, we focus on locations that enhance connectivity between key hubs, support our end-to-end logistics offering and improve overall network performance. As customer needs evolve, we\u2019ll continue to evaluate opportunities to grow the footprint in ways that reinforce speed, reliability and national coverage,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TX\">Alongside specialized and standard less-than-truckload services, Maersk\u2019s U.S. ground freight operations offer truckload, store delivery and white-glove services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TX\">Maersk Ground Freight\u2019s current fleet comprises more than 1,000 trucks and around 4,500 trailers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TX\">The Fontana hub, for instance, is set to accelerate Maersk\u2019s turnaround times by up to five hours and expand customer options through the Ontario corridor, the company said in a Jan. 28 statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-credit\">(David Paul Morris\/Bloomberg)<\/p>\n<p class=\"TX\">Maersk already has an Inland Empire Contract Logistics campus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TX\">The Fontana site also complements existing ground freight stations in Sacramento, San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TX\">Elsewhere in the U.S., as part of the expansion, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/articles\/maersk-savannah-ground-freight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ground freight division opened<\/a> a terminal in Savannah, Ga., in December. The 20,000-square-foot facility has three docks and a dedicated fleet to support pickup and delivery in the Savannah market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TX\">The location offers direct access to Interstates 95 and 16, which connect Savannah and its growing port to southeastern U.S. markets such as Atlanta; Jacksonville, Fla.; Charleston, S.C.; and Charlotte, N.C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TX\">In October, Maersk Ground Freight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/articles\/maersk-ground-freight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">opened a facility<\/a> in Coppell, Texas. The facility replaced Maersk\u2019s existing Irving station and expanded the carrier\u2019s footprint in Texas. The Coppell facility has more than 30 dock-high doors and two ramps, a spokeswoman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TX\">A substantial proportion of the top LTL carriers have sought to increase connectivity and their door counts in recent quarters, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/articles\/estes-adds-6-more-terminals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Estes Express Lines<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/articles\/knight-swift-aaa-cooper-ltl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">AAA Cooper Transportation<\/a>, particularly with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttnews.com\/articles\/ltl-rebound-2026-preview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">expectations of an upturn<\/a> in the fortunes of the segment and the freight market in general in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TX\">Maersk Ground Freight is separate from Performance Team, which operates Maersk\u2019s warehousing, e-commerce order fulfillment and drayage business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"TX\">\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Maersk Ground Freight facility in Fontana, Calif.
