After arriving in Oslo, Machado met Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr St\u00f8re.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dbR9w8BjN-I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">joint press conference<\/a> Thursday morning, St\u00f8re praised the Nobel prize winner: \u201cI would like to salute you \u2026 for your struggle. It has cost you, your family and your people a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very hopeful Venezuela will be free. We will turn the country into a beacon of hope and opportunity of democracy,\u201d said Machado, who was seeing her family for the first time in 16 months. <\/p>\n<p>In 2023, she was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/international\/article\/2024\/01\/27\/venezuela-s-supreme-court-disqualifies-opposition-leader-from-running-for-president_6469941_4.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/international\/article\/2024\/01\/27\/venezuela-s-supreme-court-disqualifies-opposition-leader-from-running-for-president_6469941_4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">disqualified from running for Venezuelan president<\/a> against authoritarian leader Nicol\u00e1s Maduro \u2014 prompting her to back candidate Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez, who lost to Maduro in an election that observers described as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/31\/world\/americas\/venezuela-election-vote-flaws.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/31\/world\/americas\/venezuela-election-vote-flaws.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">flawed<\/a>. Gonz\u00e1lez later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/sep\/08\/venezuela-opposition-leader-edmundo-gonzalez-reportedly-leaves-country-for-spain\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/sep\/08\/venezuela-opposition-leader-edmundo-gonzalez-reportedly-leaves-country-for-spain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fled the country<\/a> for Spain.<\/p>\n<p>Machado recently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/11\/05\/machado-praises-trump-venezuela-actions-00637460\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">praised<\/a>\u00a0Donald Trump for his stance against Venezuela\u2019s authoritarian government, after the U.S. president said Maduro\u2019s days in office were numbered.<\/p>\n<p>The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Machado for her \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/peace\/2025\/machado\/facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">tireless work promoting democratic rights<\/a>\u00a0for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It was Machado\u2019s first public appearance since January, after spending months in hiding in her home country.
