March 1 (Reuters) – Denmark’s Maersk said on Sunday it will pause sailings through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the \u200cSuez Canal and reroute ships around the Cape of Good \u200cHope, after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran plunged the region into turmoil.<\/p>\n
“Due \u200bto the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East region following the escalating military conflict, we have decided…to pause future Trans-Suez sailings through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait for the time being,” Maersk said in a \u200cstatement.<\/p>\n
Maersk had said on \u2060Friday it would temporarily reroute some of its sailings around the Cape of Good Hope, away from \u2060the Suez Canal, citing unforeseen constraints in the Red Sea region.<\/p>\n
The container shipping group last month announced a gradual return of some services \u200bto the \u200bSuez route, seen as a key \u200bstep towards ending two years \u200cof global trade disruption caused by attacks on ships in the Red Sea by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.<\/p>\n
“We will continue to monitor the situation closely and take all needed actions,” the company said.<\/p>\n
“Once the situation stabilises and the security conditions again permit, we will continue \u200cto prioritise the Trans-Suez route,” Maersk \u200badded, commenting on its Middle East-India to \u200bMediterranean and Middle East-India \u200bto East Coast U.S. services.<\/p>\n
Maersk also said it was \u200csuspending all vessel crossings in \u200bthe Strait of \u200bHormuz until further notice, adding that services calling ports in the Arabian Gulf may experience delays, rerouting, or schedule adjustments.<\/p>\n
The shipping \u200bgiant added it \u200cwas still accepting cargo to the Middle East.<\/p>\n
