{"id":31883,"date":"2026-03-03T16:58:16","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T16:58:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/31883\/"},"modified":"2026-03-03T16:58:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T16:58:16","slug":"new-continent-discovered-off-the-coast-of-greenland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/31883\/","title":{"rendered":"New continent discovered off the coast of Greenland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Primary school geography paints such a neat picture of the world.<\/p>\n<p>It tells us, for example, that there are seven continents on Earth, but the truth is far more complex.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers are constantly encountering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indy100.com\/science-tech\/lost-continent-near-australia-2672363114\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lost landmasses<\/a> that constitute important pieces in the puzzle of our planet\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indy100.com\/topic\/geology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">geological<\/a> past.<\/p>\n<p>Now, a whole new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indy100.com\/topic\/continent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">continent<\/a> has been found lurking beneath the icy waters of the northern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indy100.com\/topic\/atlantic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Atlantic Ocean<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indy100.com\/topic\/greenland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery was made around the Davis Strait, a large stretch of water located between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indy100.com\/topic\/canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Canada<\/a>\u2019s Baffin Island and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indy100.com\/topic\/greenland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Greenland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The strait was formed millions of years ago when the tectonic plates between the two islands shifted, reconfiguring the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indy100.com\/topic\/earth-s-crust\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Earth\u2019s crust.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This resulted in the formation of a thick continental crust in the ocean, which has now been declared a newly discovered primitive microcontinent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"f2c03\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"668c2aa550d863b3d3c19384b6eaaba5\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%203000%202000'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/the-yellow-blob-in-the-centre-here-indicates-the-location-of-the-u00a0davis-strait-proto-microcontin.jpeg\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2000\" alt=\"\"\/> The yellow blob in the centre here indicates the location of the Davis Strait proto-microcontinent within the Davis Strait(Longley et al.\/Gondwana Research)<\/p>\n<p>In a study that was published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1342937X24001023?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gondwana Research<\/a>, a team of scientists based in the UK and Sweden, reconstructed the plate tectonic movements that would have occurred in the area around the Davis Straight some 33 to 61 million years ago.<\/p>\n<p>They found that this resulted in the formation of an unusually thick slab of continental crust, which now measures between 12 and 15 miles long and sits offshore in Greenland\u2019s western waters, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/environment\/a61583467\/new-continent-discovery-greenland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Popular Mechanics<\/a> notes.<\/p>\n<p>It has now been christened the Davis Strait proto-microcontinent.<\/p>\n<p>According to the experts, studying this new landmass and its formation will help improve broader understanding of similar geographic structures. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur identified mechanism of microcontinent formation may be widely applicable to other microcontinents around the globe,\u201d the team wrote in their paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd further study is merited to understand the role of plate motion changes and transpression in microcontinent calving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This story was first published on July 17, 2024<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not all!
