They support different groups of projects under LEGO\u2019s expanding carbon removal portfolio.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"90275794-883c-4361-a20a-3f00746cf358\"><a href=\"https:\/\/carboncredits.com\/lego-bets-bold-on-renewable-resin-bricks-amid-massive-revenue-growth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LEGO<\/a> has now invested about DKK 54 million, or $8\u20138.5 million, in carbon removal initiatives across eight projects. The company says these investments help it reach its goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"0ca3f388-6f9a-4f20-a706-330dce8d8fae\">The toymaker emphasizes that it prioritizes cutting emissions within its own operations and supply chain first. The 2026 investment supports four additional projects. Together, they form a diversified carbon removal portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>Nature-Based Carbon Removal: Forest Restoration in Mexico<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"1b3f3a32-4e94-47cd-9f7e-1bfcbb06c012\">One of the four new projects funded by the 2026 investment is a<a href=\"https:\/\/carboncredits.com\/toward-a-climate-resilient-philippines-leveraging-technology-and-carbon-finance-for-reforestation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> big reforestation<\/a> effort in Quintana Roo State, Mexico. This project:<\/p>\n<p>Restores more than 14,000 hectares of degraded tropical forests.<br \/>\nIncludes native tree planting, species recovery, fire prevention, and community forest management.<br \/>\nAllocates over 20% of the budget to local job creation and income generation.<br \/>\nBringing <a href=\"https:\/\/carboncredits.com\/biodiversity-credits-a-new-way-of-funding-nature-protection\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">biodiversity<\/a> benefits and supporting ecosystems for native wildlife.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"2d57edf5-2270-41e1-a85c-5961bcbdbe5d\">This initiative is delivered through Climate Impact Partners in collaboration with Canopia Carbon. It adds to LEGO\u2019s earlier help for reforestation in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (USA). These approaches have different durability profiles. This means they store CO\u2082 for different lengths of time and may also scale in various ways.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"afa4a1b0-4fb5-411e-9475-09e27631a21f\"><a href=\"https:\/\/carboncredits.com\/meta-and-calyx-global-warn-engineered-carbon-removal-boom-risks-phantom-credits\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Engineered carbon removal<\/a> often offers higher durability than many nature-based solutions. In some cases, storage can last hundreds to thousands of years. However, these technologies are still developing and can be expensive in the early stages.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"270d2579-8551-4b52-ae38-3565a3a06d88\">LEGO chooses to try various pathways to understand costs, scalability, durability, and verification standards in the carbon removal market. It also aligns with its net-zero goals.<\/p>\n<p>Net-Zero in Motion: LEGO\u2019s Dual Approach to Emissions<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"b6051df7-3ba6-4473-9b8a-43ca1faf2728\">The LEGO Group has committed to a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions target by 2050. This target covers its full value chain, including Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. LEGO\u2019s near-term targets are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (<a href=\"https:\/\/carboncredits.com\/sbti-net-zero-standard-for-banking-and-finance\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SBTi<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"b6051df7-3ba6-4473-9b8a-43ca1faf2728\">The toymaker has committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 37% by 2032 from a 2019 baseline. It also aims to reduce absolute <a href=\"https:\/\/carboncredits.com\/what-are-scope-3-emissions-and-why-disclosure-is-important\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scope 3 emissions<\/a> by 37% within the same timeframe. In that year:<\/p>\n<p>Scope 1 (direct emissions) were approximately 23,403\u202ftCO\u2082e.<br \/>\nScope 2 (purchased energy) was very low \u2014 effectively 1\u202ftCO\u2082e when using market\u2011based accounting due to renewable energy matching.<br \/>\nScope 3 (value chain emissions) accounted for about 1.80\u202fmillion\u202ftCO\u2082e, representing roughly 99\u202f% of total emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The dominance of Scope 3 is consistent with LEGO\u2019s industry profile:<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"7ef2120b-e321-4a38-baf5-ef1c4bf48570\">Most emissions arise from materials, manufacturing by suppliers, transport, and end\u2011of\u2011life impacts, rather than from the company\u2019s own direct operations. Scope 1 and 2 emissions accounted for roughly 1% of total emissions.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"7ef2120b-e321-4a38-baf5-ef1c4bf48570\">LEGO says it uses <a href=\"https:\/\/carboncredits.com\/microsoft-hits-100-renewable-electricity-milestone-with-40gw-clean-energy-portfolio\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">100% renewable electricity<\/a> for its operations. This comes from on-site solar panels and renewable energy certificates. The company first matched 100% of its electricity use with renewable energy generation in 2017.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"7ef2120b-e321-4a38-baf5-ef1c4bf48570\">In 2024, LEGO also reported progress in sustainable materials purchasing, which indirectly contributes to reduced emissions. About<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lego.com\/cdn\/cs\/aboutus\/assets\/blt2a759726033d5b67\/LEGO_Group_Sustainability_Statement_2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> 47\u202f%<\/a> of the materials purchased to make LEGO elements were certified via mass balance principles. This translates to an estimated average of 33\u202f% renewable sources in raw materials.<\/p>\n<p data-block-id=\"7ef2120b-e321-4a38-baf5-ef1c4bf48570\">Half of all purchased materials were produced with sustainable sources.
