That would include risks like whether the companies making components are based in countries unfriendly to the EU, particularly China.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Because the risk assessment and measures have already been defined in the telecom sector, it\u2019s possible to make a decision on formally blocking high-risk 5G suppliers.\u00a0The bill would not \u201cconvert\u201d the toolbox \u2014 which is voluntary \u2014 into a mandatory requirement; instead, the law itself will state that the high-risk vendors should be blocked.<\/p>\n<p>Virkkunen said that there will be a three-year transition period for operators to phase out high-risk suppliers after the law comes into effect. The EU executive estimates that the \u201ceconomic impact\u201d of phasing out high-risk vendors from the mobile network would be between \u20ac3 billion-\u20ac4 billion, she said.<\/p>\n<p>EU capitals are \u201cnow investing heavily [in]to defense and security, and at the same time, we can\u2019t have that kind of situation [where] we have high-risk vendors in a critical part of our critical infrastructure,\u201d the executive vice president said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Commission reckons it\u2019s not yet possible to formally block suppliers in sectors beyond telecoms, because the work to identify risks has not been done in those sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Companies that have previously faced calls for stricter scrutiny include airport security scanner maker <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/114918\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nuctech<\/a>, surveillance camera maker <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/156937\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hikvision<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/europe-solar-industry-having-huawei-moment\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Huawei&#8217;s<\/a> components that connect solar panels to Europe&#8217;s energy grid, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/europe-looks-to-follow-on-tackling-risk-of-chinese-car-software\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chinese connected cars makers<\/a>.
