You might be surprised to learn that it\u2019s one at all, which is exactly how twin sisters and co-founders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ceciliemoosgaard\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cecilie<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/amaliemoosgaard\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amalie<\/a> Moosgaard intended. \u201cWe wanted Li\u00e9 to be a steady-growing company that could stand on its own, without us pushing it on our social channels,\u201d Amalie says of the accessory brand that specializes in meticulously crafted sculptural jewelry and hairpins, plus bags, belts, small leather goods, and, soon, an eyewear category launching in April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8n4qd000h3b7cgva95j37@published\" data-word-count=\"63\">The twins started posting their looks, usually consisting of vintage denim, timeless trench coats, crisp white tees and button-ups, and sweaters effortlessly thrown over their shoulders into textbook position, while working as models in their late teens and early 20s. With their fresh faces, pared-down outfit formulas, and undone hair often hidden beneath an \u201cOlsen tuck,\u201d the Copenhagen-based sisters are true Scandinavian minimalists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8n4rl000i3b7c12cx8khp@published\" data-word-count=\"109\">They gained a following during the height of Scandinavian influence, driven by brands like Ganni, Toteme, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/article\/is-cecilie-bahnsen-x-the-north-face-collaboration-worth-it.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cecilie Bahnsen<\/a>, as well as influencers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/article\/matilda-djerf-toxic-workplace-accusations.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matilda Djerf<\/a> who take a practical approach to getting dressed. \u201cWe wear very classic, minimalistic stuff that our followers can see themselves in,\u201d Amalie says. Cecilie explains that their style philosophy stems from the Copenhagen culture they grew up in. \u201cWe use our things over and over again, we dress practically for the weather, and our wool sweaters will last season after season.\u201d In 2021, they launched Li\u00e9 Studio based on these ideals, with versatile yet timeless pieces that integrated seamlessly into their own wardrobes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8n4t3000j3b7chlbvtf6b@published\" data-word-count=\"22\">Here, Amalie and Cecilie tell The Cut about the evolution of their brand and what inspires them as tastemakers and business owners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8rqev00263b7cbrlb3kpy@published\" data-word-count=\"12\">How did you bring Li\u00e9 Studio to life, having no design background?<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8qzky00103b7cxxzw1jyu@published\" data-word-count=\"14\">Amalie Moosgaard: We were always very certain about what we like and don\u2019t like.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmci61nz00263b7cbyry0t3i@published\" data-word-count=\"49\">Cecilie Moosgaard: And very good at saying \u201cno,\u201d an important quality to have. We knew exactly how we wanted to brand it and how we wanted to make our customers feel. We just tapped into our own needs and created pieces for ourselves, which made the process quite easy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmci66lg002a3b7cvru62rn5@published\" data-word-count=\"54\">AM: In the early days, the design process was much easier than it is now. We had the proof of concept in ourselves. We were lucky enough to be able to produce the things we wanted to wear because we had a very loyal following online. We didn\u2019t have to think broader than that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmci6aji002e3b7chgcgw47y@published\" data-word-count=\"14\">CM: People looked to us for style inspiration, so our designs resonated with them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8s1da002m3b7c5hn1rmrj@published\" data-word-count=\"18\">How do you stay grounded in that original Scandi-girl branding while also making sure the brand is evolving?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8sj21002v3b7cgwl3sd0e@published\" data-word-count=\"52\">AM: It\u2019s really difficult because we feel very loyal to what we know and how we created the brand, but our team is good at pushing us to look broader. We still focus on seasonless designs that stand the test of time. One thing we\u2019ll never do is logos or big branding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmci577s001y3b7c0foq7641@published\" data-word-count=\"34\">CM: And we still use the same shapes: soft and rounded. We create pieces that strike the balance between minimalist and standouts. But trying new things and developing the brand is the fun part.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmci5ahv00223b7c3qzh6deu@published\" data-word-count=\"39\">AM: Part of the evolution is us growing out of the brand. It\u2019s no longer about Amelie and Cecilie, it\u2019s just Li\u00e9. We really wanted to do our own thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmci4pkl001i3b7caot938sd@published\" data-word-count=\"11\">CM: But there was no escaping the fact that we\u2019re twins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmci4rgl001m3b7cvxdvwtsz@published\" data-word-count=\"43\">AM: Even if we get annoyed with each other after a full day of work, we end up calling each other at the end of the night. We\u2019re very similar in values, mind-set, and style. We are so aligned on so many things.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmci4tiy001q3b7cdt7h8lv2@published\" data-word-count=\"37\">CM: We tell everyone to get yourself a twin. It\u2019s a wonderful thing, especially when you\u2019re running a company. Just look at The Row! We have the ability to divide and conquer in a completely different way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmci504n001u3b7c8nwhg4ur@published\" data-word-count=\"11\">AM: We wouldn\u2019t be where we are today without each other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8sj2200343b7cc90wtrdw@published\" data-word-count=\"27\">Is there someone who has served as a muse for your work? Who are they, and how have they inspired you or pushed you to think differently?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8sj2200353b7cbhlj8i5l@published\" data-word-count=\"67\">AM: In the beginning, all of our styles were named after people who are close to us because we designed for the people around us. Friends, family, and colleagues inspire us. But also, we really inspire each other. It\u2019s the twin thing. We are copying each other constantly and always stealing from each other. That will never end, and we find a lot of inspiration in that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8sj2200363b7c6ezthd02@published\" data-word-count=\"11\">Is there a type of person that typically proves inspirational? Why?<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8sj2200373b7cea8znns9@published\" data-word-count=\"17\">AM: We love \u201990s girls: Sofia Coppola, Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow. Also Lee Radziwill and Lauren Hutton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8tyfh005g3b7cft89r4dr@published\" data-word-count=\"12\">What\u2019s the last photo in your camera roll that proved creatively inspirational?<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8sj2300393b7cw4r9g5qw@published\" data-word-count=\"37\">CM: Mine is a photo of someone\u2019s outfit at a Fashion Week event last month. She was wearing this beautiful Loewe dress. The print was amazing. Or a museum\/gallery you turn to for inspiration?<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8sj23003c3b7cn8zr82xj@published\" data-word-count=\"17\">AM: In the Copenhagen Li\u00e9 Studio store, we have this piece by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/abelburger\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Abel Burger<\/a> that I love.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmci2nvy001a3b7c9yzj4qob@published\" data-word-count=\"47\">CM: The New York\u2013based artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joehenrybaker.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Henry Baker<\/a>. Love him, he has some amazing pieces. We\u2019re big fans of the Danish artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jpilkington1\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jon Pilkington.<\/a> His stuff is colorful and fun. I think we like that in visual art because it feels more expressive than our day-to-day style.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8sj23003e3b7cetjwob6g@published\" data-word-count=\"9\">What was your goal when designing the Copenhagen flagship?<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc9335m006w3b7ctvnvmv4e@published\" data-word-count=\"63\">AM: We wanted the store to be an extension of our living room. We wanted it to be a place that feels like home. Looking at it from the outside, it could be anything \u2014 a barbershop, a perfume store, anything. We have a lot of furniture in it to make it feel homey. We focused on creating a feeling, not displaying products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmci1zug000y3b7ceks0wdnn@published\" data-word-count=\"116\">CM: One thing we\u2019ve always been cautious about is displaying campaigns. We didn\u2019t want to have a photo of a naked body wearing an earring, for example, or a handbag with a spotlight shining on it. The feel of the store is more calming and relaxing than that. To us, it\u2019s not about highlighting specific items; it\u2019s about curating a vibe. We have a full-length mirror in the store instead of a jewelry mirror because we care about how you feel when you wear our pieces and how they fit into your wardrobe. Even in our campaigns, we\u2019re not focused on displaying our products; we\u2019re focused on displaying the lifestyle of the women wearing our products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmci2bjq00123b7cqmpjk60k@published\" data-word-count=\"21\">AM: The centerpiece of the store is a cabinet that weighs about 500 kilos. It\u2019s made from beautiful, high-gloss wood veneer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmci2e1s00163b7calse2sej@published\" data-word-count=\"39\">CM: We were inspired by a piano; that was the idea for the centerpiece. That\u2019s why we wanted it to be high-gloss and have chunky legs. Those are the two places we feel most inspired and most at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmci1hd5000u3b7cngg7e5d1@published\" data-word-count=\"7\">CM: Specifically the western part of Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8sj24003m3b7cqu951e1c@published\" data-word-count=\"7\">How would you describe your shopping habits?<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8sj24003n3b7crb47yeew@published\" data-word-count=\"61\">CM: I did buy some stuff from <a href=\"https:\/\/flore-flore.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Flore Flore<\/a> recently. We both think about our purchases for a long time. I\u2019m not a good buyer in that sense. I would never just go into a shop and buy something on a whim, and I never make emotional purchases. Both of us really consider our purchases, which is very Scandinavian of us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmci0ur0000q3b7c5te12uif@published\" data-word-count=\"64\">AM: I\u2019m my best-dressed self when I\u2019m packing for a weekend trip and only have my carry-on. It\u2019s because I\u2019m only wearing the things I feel great in and have probably had for five years. We\u2019re boring in the sense that if we find a great cashmere sweater, we\u2019ll stick to it (and probably just buy the same one when it eventually needs replacing).<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmci0qvb000m3b7cjka98mu0@published\" data-word-count=\"17\">CM: Yeah, I have boots that I have repurchased three to four times because they\u2019re that good. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc8sj24003q3b7c4auicglk@published\" data-word-count=\"14\">What\u2019s the most surprising or unlikely person\/place\/artist\/image\/object that has proved inspirational for your work?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc9fl5m00ct3b7cwbotsp4u@published\" data-word-count=\"49\">CM: Our <a href=\"https:\/\/fave.co\/4l9obu9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Georgia belt<\/a> was inspired by a vintage watch we bought during a trip to Japan. We made our belt buckle based on its shape. Other than that, I think my boyfriend inspires me a lot. He\u2019s annoyingly stylish and always asks the right questions to push me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clay-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"www.thecut.com\/_components\/clay-paragraph\/instances\/cmmc94q50009i3b7cudeu9tc5@published\" data-word-count=\"29\">AM: I was watching the Westminster Dog Show recently, and that inspired me. I love how the dogs wear tight tweed, small skirts, hairpins, and glitter. That\u2019s the wonderful thing about being based in Europe. Rome, Barcelona, Athens, anywhere. But never for a week, just three to four days.
