Tesla (TSLA<\/a>, Financials<\/a>) is facing a renewed push from Germany’s powerful IG Metall union to gain greater<\/a> influence at the company’s Gigafactory in Gruenheide near Berlin, where employees are voting for a new works council.<\/p>\n

The workers council election started on Monday at Tesla’s lone factory in Europe. The results should be out later on Wednesday. The council is an important part of Germany’s labor system since it represents workers in talks with management.<\/p>\n

IG Metall has put forth 116 candidates and wants to win 19 out of 37 seats, which would give them a simple majority. In the last election, which was two years ago, the union won 16 of the 39 council seats, leaving the council mostly made up of people who were not union members.<\/p>\n

Union officials claim their campaign is all about working conditions and representing workers. But Tesla’s management says the union is seeking to get more members at the facility.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, tensions between the two sides got worse when Tesla filed a criminal complaint saying that a union member covertly videotaped a works council meeting. IG Metall said the claim was false.<\/p>\n
