The demonstration had been peaceful and without incident, he said in late afternoon.

Many of the demonstrators were supporters of Iranian opposition politician Reza Pahlavi, the son of the late shah who was overthrown in 1979. Some carried posters showing photos of him, while others held up signs and banners saying, “The mullahs must go” and “Democracy for Iran.”

Speakers at the event recalled the thousands of people who were killed during the protests against the hardline Islamic leadership in Iran at the start of the year and the thousands still being held captive.

Many attendees held Iranian flags. There were also German, Israeli and US flags in front of the stage and some demonstrators wore Israeli flags draped around their shoulders. Others painted US flags on their faces.

Israel and the US attacked Iran about a week ago, and US President Donald Trump is threatening to further expand the deadly attacks.

In Dusseldorf, around 2,500 people rallied under the banner, “Freedom for Iran,” the police said, in a turnout around half the size of a rally last week, which saw 5,000 people attend.

Both rallies, held under the same banner, were peaceful, police said.

<img alt="People with the old Iranian flag and the Israeli flag take part in a protest celebrating the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.
