Australians will get to witness something that hasn’t happened in decades this week when Denmark’s King Frederik and Queen Mary<\/a> arrive on our shores. It’s the first official visit to Australia<\/a> since Frederik X became King in 2024, but the fourth since they’ve been a couple.<\/p>\n

But their trip also marks the first Danish head of state visit to Australia<\/a> in nearly 40 years and also the first time a reigning Australian-born Queen<\/a> has ever come here in an official capacity. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it’s an honour to welcome the pair.<\/p>\n

“Denmark and Australia are great friends, and together we are working to build a more sustainable, secure and peaceful future,” he said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis visit is an opportunity to deepen our cooperation across a number of shared interests such as sustainability, renewable energy and innovation.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir Majesties, The King and Queen of Denmark, have a very special connection with Australia, and I know Australians will welcome them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Frederik and Mary will touch down this Saturday (March 14) and will tour the country for six days, before departing next Thursday (March 19).<\/p>\n

Queen Mary was last in Australia in February 2025 in an unofficial capacity, where she was spotted in Hobart.<\/p>\n

She also visited in 2024 with her twins, Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent.<\/p>\n

The government revealed their Majesties will visit the Northern Territory, the ACT, Victoria, and Tasmania, where Queen Mary was born during their whirlwind trip to Australia.<\/p>\n

Their engagements will be a mix of business, nature, and cultural events.<\/p>\n

According to SBS<\/a>, traditional owners will welcome the royal couple at Uluru and they’ll watch the sunset over the Aussie landmark with Indigenous elders.<\/p>\n

When they arrive at the nation’s capital, they’ll be greeted by a 21-gun salute and will meet with Governor-General Sam Mostyn.<\/p>\n

They’ll also get to visit federal parliament while in the ACT.<\/p>\n

There will also likely be a glitzy state banquet during their six-day state that will be complete with gorgeous dresses and a tiara.<\/p>\n

The royal couple will also get a chance to visit where Queen Mary grew up in Hobart and see her family and friends.<\/p>\n

But the King and Queen won’t be alone during their stay.<\/p>\n

They’re bringing a delegation of 55 companies from Denmark as the royal couple promote the ‘Partnering for a Green, Secure and Sustainable Tomorrow’ initiative.<\/p>\n

“Green transition will be a key focus of the visit,” the Danish royal website<\/a> said.<\/p>\n

“The initiative is intended to promote cooperation in the fields of renewable energy and energy-efficient urban development.<\/p>\n

“A strengthened partnership with Australia is particularly important at a time when geopolitical shifts have economic and security implications that link developments in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region.<\/p>\n

“Building on the strategic partnership between Australia and Denmark signed in 2023, the state visit aims to enhance cooperation across a broad range of areas, including the green transition and economic security.”<\/p>\n
