Do they have anything in common?<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">On the surface, the dramas in Iran, Panama, Venezuela and Greenland look separate, each with its own cast, excuse and headlines. What links them is not ideology, or the public language used to sell each move. It is the map.<\/p>\n<p>Iran sits beside the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/week-asia\/economics\/article\/3345098\/asia-faces-oil-shock-us-iran-war-chokes-strait-hormuz?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, the choke point for Gulf energy flows. Panama sits astride one of the world\u2019s <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3345361\/panama-out-study-says-china-investing-us239-billion-worlds-seaports?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">trade arteries<\/a>. Venezuela matters because it sells <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/global-economy\/article\/3338804\/if-us-seizes-control-venezuelas-oil-who-wins-and-who-loses?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">heavy crude oil<\/a>. Greenland matters because the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/world\/europe\/article\/3343235\/nato-launches-arctic-sentry-mission-bid-ease-greenland-tensions-trump?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Arctic<\/a> is opening up as a route and military zone.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Put those points together and a harder question comes into view. Are we watching a run of unrelated crises or a contest over routes, ports, oil and access?<\/p>\n<p>Start with the immediate results. China is <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3342374\/us-toughens-stance-how-exposed-china-iranian-and-venezuelan-oil?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">losing room<\/a> to manoeuvre in two oil markets that mattered to it, Venezuela and Iran. Freight risk has gone up across Asia. Insurance costs have risen. Russia has more room to sell crude oil to China. Those are not abstract outcomes. They are real costs, felt now.The effect is not confined to China. It falls across Asia because this is where the trade shock and the energy shock meet. The region remains a manufacturing base and a destination for Gulf oil.
