WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – President Donald Trump reiterated calls to annex Greenland on Friday at the White House as a bipartisan group of lawmakers headed to Denmark to reassure European leaders that America won\u2019t take the territory by force.<\/p>\n
Trump said again on Friday that Greenland should join the U.S. whether they like it or not.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need Greenland for national security very badly. If we don\u2019t have it, we have a big hole in national security,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
While the president says his administration is talking to NATO, several of the alliance\u2019s members are sending troops to Greenland in response to threats.<\/p>\n
That prompted the president to up the ante on countries opposing his Greenland plans, using a familiar threat earlier in the day.<\/p>\n
\u201cI may do that for Greenland, too. I may put a tariff on countries if they don\u2019t go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security. So, I may do that,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
The potential for military action now has members of his own party threatening consequences.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne way or the other way, whether it\u2019s even Republican control. Or if it\u2019s, Democrat control, after November, I think it would lead to impeachment. I think it\u2019s invading. Ally to me is a high crime and misdemeanor. And we have a treaty. We have, the NATO agreement, and it\u2019s, so would be it basically severing this whole agreement and invading an ally, a democracy. It\u2019s immoral. It\u2019s wrong,\u201d said Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.).<\/p>\n
Other Republicans, like Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), are saying that the U.S. should be focusing on Greenland as an ally, not some sort of asset.<\/p>\n
